What is it like nowadays? You could say it's a small town in a struggling economy. It has always felt the pains of a troubled economy, and perhaps more so than the surrounding cities. Most of Wadesboro's workforce is either employed at local mills or for the most part struggling with the operation of their own businesses. In town, you can find all the basic essentials - a new Super Wal-Mart where all the locals can be found, a Dollar General, and the typical fast food joints.
So what is there to do in such a small, struggling place? Believe it or not, there are some interesting finds. Here we enumerate three of them.
The PeeDee Wildlife Refuge
Located on highway 52 North of town, the refuge is a quiet and somewhat beautiful place to let the day's cares melt away. A short gravel walking trail can be found meandering through part of the park, and a drive can be accessed by car throughout the entire park - allowing you to see enchanting swamps where the local birds and animals play, a pretty pond with a place to sit and enjoy the view, and gorgeous evergreen woods where you may find yourself whisked away for at least a moment. Take your bike here, too, for there are trails built just for it if you drive a little ways into the park.
High School Football Game
One thing that the locals really love is their high school football team, the Bearcats. Friday night games are a big thing, especially when they're playing on the home field. Admission is around $6 a person, and the excitement the small town dishes up is well worth it. The high school is located right on Highway 74, across from Super Wal-Mart.
Pool, Tennis, etc. at Little Park
Little Park is one of the town's oldest parks, and it's situated on the same road as the county's tiny airport, on Airport Road. It's here at the park where you can enjoy the small pool where many parents have their children take swimming lessons during the summer, and it's also where you can enjoy a game of tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer, or whatever your heart delights in. They've also recently incorporated a circular walking trail around the soccer field.
