Tips on How to Improve Presentation Skills
- Based on your own experiences, you can say that most people hate to be forced to listen to someone ramble for hours. Use this general idea when you are trying to learn how to improve presentation skills. This means that you should try to make a short presentation that would mostly tackle the meat of the matter. Forget about using fillers because they would leave you with a weak presentation. It would only bury your listeners to too many details that are not relevant to your point anyway.
- It always helps to get some feedback from the right people. If you don't have enough funds to take a short course or seminar on public speaking, you can join a local toastmasters' chapter so that you would have the chance to meet people who are just like you. From the experience, you would not only have the chance to hone your social skills, but you would also have the opportunity to get good feedback how you can improve your presentation. In choosing a club to join, you only have to make sure that your schedule would fit well to their weekly meeting so that you won't have to make excuses when you miss it.
- Practice makes perfect. Even if you don't have some presentation to work on, utilize your skills by volunteering your services to a civic group of your choice. There are so many groups and agencies that need people to speak for their cause. By volunteering some of your time for these kind of tasks, you would be able to help the community while you are practicing on your presentation skills.
- Be confident. Your audience wants to listen to a presenter who knows what he or she is doing. By showing your confidence, they know that you know what you are talking about. It can also lend vigor to your voice and you can deliver your piece properly. Forget about boring them to death. They would love to come back and listen to you again if you are vibrant. Achieving this is easy. Aside from mentally preparing yourself, don't forget to practice in front of the mirror.
- Be naturally humorous. Listeners love a presenter who knows when to laugh and inject humor to his or her presentation. This would not only help make you relax, but it would also offer a better ambiance for everyone in the room. The more at ease they are to you, the more they would pay attention. The only thing you have to keep in mind is to know when exactly you should use humor to your advantage. If you are going to overdo it, you would make them feel like you are trying too hard.
- Present examples. Whenever you are trying to sell an idea or a specific product even, you have to make sure that your audience can relate to what you are talking about. You can make it easier for them by giving out examples in your presentation. Think of things they can totally relate at and use it to make them understand just what your paint this. At the end of the presentation, they would absorb more if they know how it relates to their own lives.
- Before you even start writing for your presentation, the most important thing you should do first is to gauge your audience. Keep in mind that people tend to react differently as far as presentation goes. Just like in marketing, you have to know who you are selling your ideas to. This way, they won't feel alienated. This is also a good way to make sure that you would be able to get your point across. Build your presentation based on your listeners' level of understanding and anticipate the things they may want to hear from you.
- As most people have done in the past, it is easy to succumb to nervousness. Doing so is a big mistake because the more nervous you are, the more uptight you will be. Instead of giving in to your nerves, be fun and humorous instead. Just make sure that you are going to do it at your expense because making fun of someone in the audience can quickly make things sour for all of you. Always be natural and don't forget to enjoy yourself as well because this will reflect on your mood and the tone of your voice as well.
- Visual aids are important to any presentation because they would help you get your point across easily. Do not bombard your visual aids with texts alone because this would only make things harder for you and your audience. Pictures are easier to place and they would also make your ideas clearer. For figures, you can also turn to pies and different charts in order to show what you are talking about.
- The more knowledgeable you are about the subject matter you are going to tackle, the more comfortable you would be. Don't forget to do your homework and research on the facts closely so that if ever someone would throw a question at you, there would be no need to grasp around for the right answer. Knowing a lot of facts would also lead you to give a smoother presentation and a confidence that lets people know that you know what you are talking about.
- Since you already have a lot of facts in your hand, you have to learn what ideas to give and which ones should you keep to yourself. Overstuffing your presentation with too many facts can damage everything you have prepared. Not only will the audience have a hard time digesting these facts, they would also be more prone to boredom. Select relevant facts alone and make sure that what you are about to tell your audience are within their level of understanding. Presenting something that's overly simple would only insult them. On the other hand, telling them something that's too complicated would only muddle the whole issue.
- Encourage audience participation. Do not be a mere lecturer. You should also be an instrument of brainstorming. By giving the audience a chance to share their own ideas about the subject, you are making yourself more memorable to them. This is also one of the best ways to get their input on a subject matter that may play a big impact on the company or in the community.
