Top Tips for Your Oily Hair

Is Your Hair Oily Enough to Fry Food In?

Lilah Lane
If you're anything like me, your hair gets so oily it looks like it's been slathered in gel. You want that lovely gloss and shimmer of a shampoo commercial head, but it just doesn't happen. I have a friend who constantly tells me: "Your hair is oily enough to fry food in". And that's something we all want to hear, right? Not really, because the oilier your hair is, the more dirt will be able to stick to it.

Washing your hair gets rid of the oil for a few days, four or five at the most. Here are some helpful tips to keep your hair glossy for longer.

Double Shampoo:
Shampoo gets rid of all the oil and dirt in your hair, and conditioner removes all the knots, and moisturizes. So obviously, if you have a lot of oil in your hair, you should shampoo more than once. I usually shampoo twice, condition and then shampoo again. If you're worried about your hair becoming brittle with all that shampooing, you can use a moisturizing or repairing shampoo last.

Bicarbonate Soda Shampoo:
Now, before you starting thinking I'm crazy, bicarb soda is great for removing buildup, like on batteries. Simply mix some bicarb soda with your normal shampoo, shampoo once and you'll have sparkly clean hair. This is a great option because it's so quick and cheap!

Use Less Conditioner:
Like I said before, conditioner moisturizes your hair. So it's not really helping if you have oily hair. If you have oily hair all over, only use the tiniest bit of conditioner, focusing on the ends of your hair. Or if you have an oilier scalp, just condition the ends.

Styling Oily Hair:
If you need to style your hair, oily hair is generally easier to work with because shiny hair will slip out of position. But if you put your hair up in a beautiful style, it will still look oily and limp. You have a few options on how to achieve perfect hair; you can wash your hair so it's shiny, and then use heaps of hairspray. You could wash your hair a few days before so it's not as hard to style with, or you could style your hair with oily hair and then use a hair shine spray.

If you have oily hair, always use the shampoos that are formulated for oily hair. After you've finished washing your hair, rinse it with cold water because this closes the hair cuticles, and keeps your hair cleaner for longer. I hope these tips help in keeping your hair glossy!
