Having a home office is essential for home business owners, freelancers and busy families. However, creating a home office that is suitable, and functional is something that of course could prove to be more troublesome than you first imagine. How you use your work space, and what you use your home office for is really the starting point for any home office decoration and planning.
In addition to this there are lots of things to remember and bare in mind when creating a home office here are just a few of them.
- 1. Remember to have enough storage space. More often than not home offices lack adequate storage space. The result of course is clutter and mess, so map out and plan how much storage you require, and most importantly what type of storage you can fit into your home office.
- 2. Keep it private. Privacy is essential for a home office. Even if you home office is in your kitchen it's still important that it is as private as possible, especially if you are making or taking calls.
- 3. Keep it free from distractions. Get rid of and eliminate anything you don't need, including the TV.
- 4. Don't forget the colour scheme. Even the smallest of home offices and work spaces needs to be decorated and furnished appropriately. Decorate the office to suit both your style and the style/layout of the office. For example use light colours in small spaces.
- 5. Keep it functional and useable. More often than not home offices can end up being cluttered with gym equipment, kid's toys and just general household junk and rubbish, so keep this in mind, and don't turn your office into a dumping ground.
- 6. Remember the essentials. From the phone line to the laptop, make sure you have adequate space for your home office essentials.
- 7. Make sure you have enough plugs and power points. This might sound trivial but having enough for the office phone, laptop, printer and phone charger is essential.
Of course, not everyone has a dedicated home office/working space, so sometimes it is just about making the best out of what you have. To ensure you get the best out of your space its ideal to plan out what you want, like and most importantly need. Getting to grips with how much space you have to work with, and what you need to put in that space will ensure you get a home office that is functional and practical at the same time.
