Christmas is always a busy time for the toy industry as parents make a mad dash to ensure their children get everything on their Christmas lists. Often, the toys which are most high in demand sell out, leaving parents frustrated and desperate to get their hands on the things they have been asked for. This is when shopping early is a good idea. Toy retailers began compiling lists of their predicted top toys for Christmas 2010 as early as July. The problem is, each list is different so how are you supposed to know which toys are the most popular? Don't despair! Some of the toys listed seemed to appear more frequently than others, so this is a more in depth guide to the top toys for Christmas 2010.

Zhu Zhu Hamsters

If your children have ever asked you for a hamster but you aren't keen on feeding it and cleaning it out, a Zhu Zhu Hamster may well be the answer you're looking for! Zhu Zhu Hamsters are interactive plush hamsters that move around just like a real hamster. Zhu Zhu Hamsters have two play modes. One is the nurturing mode which means the hamster will purr, the other is adventure mode which is the most entertaining setting. In adventure mode, the Zhu Zhu Hamster will explore its surrounding using clever in-built technology which allows the hamster to react to different stimuli. To make them even more fun, there are endless varieties of playsets to go with the hamsters if you are willing to pay that little bit extra. Some of the playsets available are Hamster stollers, Hamsters arena, Hamster sports car and a Hamsters airport! With so many options available, it's clear why Zhu Zhu Hamsters are listed as one of the top toys for Christmas 2010.

Sylvanian Families Regency Hotel

Sylvanian Families has been a popular toy for girls for over twenty years. Every Christmas, a new big set is always released just in time for the Christmas letters to begin arriving in Santa's mailbox. This year, it's the Sylvanian Families Regency Hotel that is high on the list of top toys for Christmas 2010. The Regency Hotel is a three storey house with nine rooms inside. As always, the hotel can be fully opened, and inside is a working chandelier (battery operated).Usually, these large Sylvanian Families sets include very little or nothing inside. The Regency Hotel comes with a reception desk, luggage trolley and suitcases and other hotel necessities, plus two Sylvanian characters, Basil the Chef and Suzette the waitress. Any other room furniture must be purchased separately.

LegoCity Fire Station

Much like Sylvanian Families, Lego has been around for a long time and is always a safe bet as a Christmas gift for a boy. The Lego City Fire Station is not a new toy, but has been tipped to be a top Christmas seller this year. The set consists of a control station with alarm rooms, garages with moving doors, a set of Lego fire fighters and two fire engines!

Jet Pack Buzz Lightyear

When Toy Story was originally released, parents were literally wrestling each other to get Buzz Lightyear toys for their children's Christmas gift. With the recent release of Toy Story 3, the Buzz Lightyear toy has been updated and is predicted to be one of the top toys for Christmas 2010. Jet Pack Buzz Lightyear is fully poseable and comes with pop out wings, realistic arm laser lights and a retractable helmet. The best thing about this updated Buzz Lightyear is the rocket pack which has numerous sound effects and jet lights. He also has sound effect buttons on his chest. Anyone who has been captivated by Toy Story 3 will have a great time with this gift!

VTech Kidizoom Video Camera

VTech is a big name in kids toys, and the Kidizoom Video Camera is going to be the next big thing. The Kidizoom cameras come in a variety of colours so they are suitable for both girls and boys. The camera is made specifically to withstand the clumsy fingers of kids but it is still a fully working camera with a colour LCD screen and chunky buttons. Children can capture photographs and movies then upload them to the computer or even play them on the television! Perfect for budding photographers!

Paper Jamz Guitar

Everyone wants to be a rock star, so it's no surprise that Paper Jamz guitars are one of the top toys for Christmas 2010. These string free guitars come in many shapes and colours, and they are touch sensitive. Instead of having to learn chords, you just tap the circuit-embedded paper and it makes the sound of a real guitar! The Paper Jamz guitars come with three different modes. You can also buy an amp for the guitar, and if you don't mind the noise, a drum set!

Stinky the Garbage Truck

This is the ultimate in brilliant top toys for Christmas 2010! Stinky is no ordinary garbage truck. He is actually an interactive robot that can sing, dance, talk and fart! Feed toy cars into Stinky's garbage control and watch him express his delight at being fed. When he is full up, he can dump the "rubbish" out and will demand more food! Never before has having a toy truck been more fun, and with over one hundred phrases, Stinky will be an interesting addition to the family!

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Disk Alien Ultimatrix

Ben 10 fans will definitely have this on their Christmas list! This Ultimatrix is just like the one Ben wears in the TV show. It straps on to the wrist and is loaded with lights and sound effects. Alien mini discs can be put into the Ultimatrix and the alien on the disc pops up and unlocks more light and sound effects!

Lego Toy Story Western Train

Yet another Toy Story product makes the list of the top toys for Christmas 2010! This fantastic Lego train set includes Buzz, Jessie, Woody, Bullseye, Rex and Hamm, and a train with three cars. The doors of the cars open and there are trap doors on the rooftops. The cars join together with magnetic bricks so there are no awkward links to contend with. Prices for this train set fluctuate from store to store, so shop around for the best price.

Ladybird Wooden Dolls House

You may not think of dolls houses as being popular toys these days, but it seems that they are about to make a comeback. The Ladybird Wooden Dolls House is built on two storeys, with an additional room in the roof. It comes with painted furniture and four dolls to live in the house! If the Ladybird version of the wooden dolls house is a little out of your price range, there are lots of other alternatives available.

The top toys for Christmas 2010 may vary a little between now and December 25th, but these are the current most popular toys recommended by top toy retailers in the UK.

    There are some great toys this year. The Zsu Zsu pets in the USA ran out last year, and it was almost like the Furby craze over again. Still very cool though. Nice to see Lego still way up there on the list.
