Top TV Shows of the 80s

Debra Pamplin
Remember the Huxtables? The Seavers? Chief Archie Bunker ? If so, then you experienced some of the greatest TV shows of the 80s. Choosing three of my favorite TV shows from this decade was not an easy chore. So many to choose from, and only my top 3 favorites made the cut. The ones still worth mentioning are Dukes of Hazzard (what kid didn't), My Two Dads, Miami Vice, and of course (Did I do that?)Family Matters. These shows made staying at home more worthwhile.

In the Heat of the Night- This show stars Carroll O'Connor has Chief Gillespie of Sparta, Mississippi. This town of Sparta was still filled with people who hated other races, and as chief of a town filled with just as many blacks as white, it was his job to protect all races....A far cry from his days of Archie Bunker on All in the Family. This show mixed humor with drama, and made for a pretty good weekly show. This show ran from 1988-1994. Also, 4 TV movies were made based on the show.

Growing Pains-two words- Kirk Cameron. What teenage girl didn't love him? What teenage boy didn't want to be him? As Mike Seaver, he defined the very definition of Mike Seaver. This family TV show featured savvy parents, a cool guy, brainy daughter, and the side-kick younger brother. This show brought laughter into the homes of many for several seasons. This was one of the last good TV shows. The 90s brought us reality, but only by replacing the comedy series.

The Cosby Show- Bill Cosby is a comedic genius!! He provided America with such a great show for many years. Starting out based on his own personal experiences and stand-up routine, The Cosby Show started out strong, and ended strong. Kids that you could related to, and parents that were fun and inviting. This show demonstrating good parenting, at the hands of five children. Each "Huxtable child" had their own attitude, style, and strong comedic timing. I know that in our house, whenever a break from reality was in order, the Cosby Show was our choice. That 30 minutes was an uninterrupted giggle fest. There has not been a show that has been able to provide what Mr. Cosby provided for us in the 80s. Few shows have even come close to entertaining and captivating an audience in such as way as The Cosby Show did, and still does today. Aren't reruns great?

Good choices. I love In the Heat of the Night. I think my all time 80's show is Star Trek the Next Generation!
