Education is a hot topic across the nation right now. As a result, the amount of information being disseminated can be mind-boggling.

Twitter, with its 140 character limit, gives you just enough information to arouse your interest on a great story or let you know it's an issue you'd probably rather pass on.

Here are my Top Ten education-related Twitter accounts to keep you up-to-date on the latest news and events in the world of education. They were chosen primarily for their universal informational appeal to parents, homeschooling parents, and professional educators.

@nyteducation - From the editors of the quarterly education section of the New York Times. Tweets link to information on a wide variety of education related topics, from colleges and universities to financial aid and student loans. Great stuff for parents and teachers alike.

@getschooled - A national program, developed with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Tweets focus on resources and community outreach across the nation to promote involvement in education.

@teachermagazine - A Maryland-based publication providing resources for K - 12th grade teachers. Tweets relate to curriculum, classroom environment and technologies, and instruction techniques.

@AmericanEdNews - A fairly new Twitter education account that tweets on national, regional, and local media reports covering to education-related topics.

@usnewseducation - From the education editors at U.S. News and World Report. Tweets cover a variety of topics, including news and school rankings. Recent tweets include links to the World's Best Universities and to the Ten Mistakes Made on Law School Applications.

@NASSP - Official Twitter account for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The site is maintained by Bob Farrace, the association's communications director. Farrace tweets on everything from individual principals' accomplishments to national news on education issues.

@PBSTeacherline - A service of PBS Teachers. Tweets focus on professional development and resources for Pre-K through 12th grade teachers. Recent tweets have highlighted "Featured Innovators" in the field of education.

@educator - Related to the Educator website, which provides math and science assistance geared for the high school or college student. News bites are intermingled with tweets containing links to educational tutorials.

@Dlourcey - Tweets from Don Lourcey, Director for the North Carolina Virtual Public School. His bio indicates he is a "360 Degree Leader; Web 2.0 Geek; Passionate about 21st Century leadership to impact 21st Century Learning" Tweets on various education topics, with an emphasis on virtual learning progress and practices.

@usedgov - The official Twitter account of the U.S. Department of Education. Tweets occasionally border on propaganda for the administration's policies, but interesting, and sometimes useful, information surfaces more often than not.
