Top Two Haunted Attractions in Kentucky

Tourists from all over America are drawn to Kentucky for its paranormal activity. Several graveyards, buildings, Universities, houses and lands are known to be haunted. However, there are certain locations that seem to be the hotspot for the supernatural occurrences.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Waverly Hills Sanatoriumis located in Jefferson County. The land that Waverly Hills is built on was first purchased by Major Thomas Hays in 1883. He had built a small school house and hired Lizzie Harris to teach the students. Some of Harris' favorite books were the Walter Scott Waverley novels. So because of this, Harris named her school Waverley School. Hays became fond of this name and decided to name his entire property Waverley Hill. Over the years, the name of this property slowly changed to "Waverly Hills". The name was carried over when The Board of Tuberculosis purchased this land to build the hospital.

The Waverly Hills Sanatorium first opened in 1910 when there was a tuberculosis outbreak in Jefferson County. Waverly Hills was built to hold about 40 patients. The swampland in the area made it possible for the tuberculosis bacteria to survive and multiply, causing more people to fall ill. Over the next few years, expansions were built onto this hospital to accommodate more patients.

A tunnel had been built leading from outside into Waverly Hills, making it easier for workers to enter and exit. There was also a cart on a cable system they had used to haul their equipment. Later this tunnel was used for transporting dead bodies from the hospital.

Waverly Hills was eventually closed down in 1962 when cases of tuberculosis became rare to none. 8,212 people died at the Sanatorium in the span of 50 years.

Waverly Hills is still in tact today and is known as one of the world's most haunted places. The owners offer tours in which you can walk around the entire hospital and learn about the Waverly Hills' staff and patients. People have claimed to hear several noises and to see apparitions, shadow people and orbs at Waverly Hills. Some of these sightings have even been captured on camera.

Frozen Creek Orphanage

Frozen Creek Orphanage is located in the outskirts of Salyersville just as you enter into Breathitt County. This orphanage, also said to have been some type of bible institute, was a small campus consisting of several small buildings. The orphanage was located quite far from town with hardly any sign of civilization around. Since the campus was located so far away among hills and other rough grounds, the children lived there in dormitories.

In 1939, the students and staff were warned of a tornado heading their way. For protection, they all filed into the boiler room on campus. However, the assumption of a tornado was wrong and there was a flood instead. Unaware of this occurring, the students and staff ended up trapped in the boiler room and drowned.

Popular ghost stories consist of hearing children laughing or crying, feeling a since of dread in the boiler room, being watched in what was known as the "punishment room" and seeing children.

Most of the buildings of the Frozen Creek Orphanage were torn down in 2006, due to severe vandalism and parties being held there. However, this hasn't prevented the paranormal activity from occurring.
