Top Valentine's Day Love Songs Quiz

Test Your Knowledge

Sandra Petersen
Billboard magazine has ranked the popularity of songs playing on the radio, on turntables, and, more recently, on CD players since 1936. The subject of this test is the songs occupying the number one position on Billboard's Top 100 list on past Valentine's Days. How well do you know the lyrics to these top love songs?

1. In the 1960 song "Teen Angel", a sixteen-year-old girl loses her life when she returns to a car stalled on the railroad tracks. What do the rescuers find in her lifeless hand?
A. A single rose petal
B. A necklace of silver
C. A movie ticket stub
D. Her boyfriend's high school ring.

2. The Beatles had a song in the number one spot on the Billboard magazine charts on Valentine's Day 1964. What was it?
A. "I Want To Hold Your Hand"
B. "Eight Days a Week"
C. "I'll Follow the Sun"
D. "Can't Buy Me Love."

3. What crashed to the ground in the 1977 Valentine's Day chart topper "Blinded By the Light?"
A. Go cart Mozart
B. The boulder on his shoulder
C. The calliope
D. The dictaphone.

4. After Suzie leaves him for a foreign guy in the 1973 song "Crocodile Rock," Elton John dreams of
A. The local diner and the good old days
B. His gold Chevy and his old blue jeans
C. Sunshine days and holding hands
D. Suzie's tight dresses.

5. What colors are mentioned in "Karma Chameleon," the top Valentine's Day song in 1984 by Culture Club?
A. Silver, blue, red
B. Purple, red, ochre
C. Black, white, gray
D. Red, gold, green

6. Tommy and Gina in Bon Jovi's 1987 song "Livin' On a Prayer" have fallen on tough times. While Gina wants to run away or cry, Tommy has done something to get more money. What has he done?
A. Taken a second job
B. Donated blood
C. Hocked his guitar
D. Robbed a gas station.

7. What pair of opposites does the 1990 song "Opposites Attract" performed by Paula Abdul and Wild Pair not mention?
A. One likes champagne; the other prefers beer
B. One smokes; the other does not like cigarettes
C. One likes television; the other prefers movies
D. One likes things neat; the other is messy.

8. Right Said Fred listed the things he was "Too Sexy" for in this 1992 song. They include all but
A. His car
B. Your party
C. His mom
D. Milan.

9. Usher, in his 2002 Valentine's Day chart topper, "U Got It Bad," says you know you got it bad when
A. You think of death
B. You hang up and call right back
C. You starve yourself
D. You go to all the familiar places.

10. In 2009, Kelly Clarkson sang "My Life Would Suck Without You," singing that "Being with
you is so . . ." what?
A. Beautiful
B. Unbelievable
C. Dysfunctional
D. Indescribable.

Now let's see how your answers compare with the correct ones.
1. The answer is D. The ring was the suggested reason the girl was in the car when it was hit by the train. Jean Dinning Surrey and her husband Red Surrey wrote this tragic love song performed by Jean's brother Mark Dinning. It was the only hit song he recorded.

2. A is the answer, although all of these songs were recorded by the Beatles in 1964. This song was co-written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon and recorded in London's Abbey Road Studios. It was the first of the Beatles' songs to hit the top of the charts in the United States.

3. Okay, so this isn't a love song like the rest but you have to admit, it has an interesting sound. C, the calliope, was the item in the chorus of this song which met its ill fate although each of the other answers occur elsewhere in the song's lyrics. The song was performed by Manfred Mann's Earth Band but written by Bruce Springsteen.

4. B. In the early verses of the song, Elton John sings about his old gold Chevy and his times with the later unfaithful Suzie, things he reminisces about in the late nights after she has left him. There seems to be no such dance as the Crocodile Rock, but there is a Crocodile Rock Café in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with pizza and live shows, and a Crocodile Rock pub and restaurant in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

5. Boy George and Culture Club wish Karma Chameleon, the selfish ever-changing object of love in the title, could be red, gold, and green, D, like in his dreams. Instead, she (or he) seems to change to match the mood of the environment surrounding them.

6. Couples who have fallen on tough times have used each of these methods of getting extra income but the source of a little money Tommy finds is C, taking his guitar to the local hock shop. This song spent four weeks on the top of the Billboard song chart and is the signature song for the band.

7. The correct answer is A. I can think of a few television shows where the couple have definite differences of opinion: Sam and Diane in "Cheers," for instance. The song is from the "Forever Your Girl" album released under the Virgin recording label.

8. C, and I think Right Said Fred's Mommas may object to the English threesome's "too sexy" statements. Incidentally, this song was played at the end of the second Shrek movie, as "sung" by Prince Charming.

9. A person hit by the dart of love may react in all these ways after breaking up with his or her loved one but B is the answer. The song appeared under the Arista recording label on the album "8701." It was at the number one spot for six non-consecutive weeks.

10. The correct answer is C, but can you think of a relationship which isn't a little dysfunctional at times? This song was co-written by Dr. Luke, Max Martin, and Claude Kelly and was Clarkson's second solo to hit the top of the charts in the United States.
