Great Valentines for Boys and Girls

Amanda Herron
Kids love Valentine's Day but may not be as thrilled with flowers and chocolates as much as adults. Ok, so maybe they would love Valentine's chocolates, but choosing a sweet Valentine's Day gift without all the sugar and caffeine will make both kids and parents happier in the end.

Nursery Rhyme Tease Valentine Combo

The Be Mine Valentine board book comes with a matching t-shirt in ray or red with flying hippos, hearts and "Be Mine Valentine." The set runs $25 at NurseryRhymeTease.com. The company's combo of nursery rhyme reading and cute fashion has been featured in People Magazine's Celebrity Baby Blog, The E! Channel's Dr. 90210, and New York Magazine's 2009 Valentine's Day gift guide.

Tatiri Pig Stationery Case

This adorable pencil case is pink with simple red hearts. Purple ears and red pig nose give it character. Complete with eight colored pencils, a six-inch ruler, an eraser and a pencil sharpener so your little Valentine can get to work on a creative thank you. $20 at Oompa.com.

Handsome Devil Tee

A cleverly designed black T-shirt with devilish writing will let everyone know your toddler is a Handsome Devil. Perfect for your tiny male Valentines.

UBOOOSHI LOVE Tee

Another celebrity favorite (especially of Reese Witherspoon and Brangelina) this sweet t-shirt has tiny sketches of hands spelling out "Love" in sign-language on a slightly lopsided red heart.

Lomography Diana F+ Medium Format Camera

Give your Valentine a creative gift to explore art and photography. The all-plastic camera produces soft focus images with saturated colors and unpredictable blurring effects. Lomography became a cult hit in the art world in the late 60s and this modern version of the original Diana recreates that style. For another option, remove the lens for a pinhole camera. Both are great ways to learn the basics of photo manipulation and produce cool pictures and look really artsy - all things you middle to high school age child is probably into.

EyeClops BioniCam

This is perfect for the young explorers or scientists in your family. A perfect Valentine gift for boys as well as girls. The EyeClops BioniCam has a multiple zoom lens to magnify bugs or other tiny specimens. The color LCD shows off the view while the built-in digital camera and flash drive lets them take a photo or video to upload and share. About $50 through Best Brands Club.

Jockey Being Family Bear

This cuddly, sweet bear is only $7.50, but Jockey will donate $3 of that to adoption charities like the North American Council on Adoptable Children and the Dave Thomas Foundation. Jockey is also a sponsor of adoption with employee volunteer projects like "Home Adaptations" to fix up the homes of adoptive families for children with disabilities. Use the opportunity to talk to your elementary age children about issues like adoption and charity, or just give your child a sweet, inexpensive plush knowing the money went to a good cause.

MiJam Drumsticks for iPod

Plug the MiJam Drummer's sticks into an iPod, MP3 player or other music player and you can pretend you're a rock star drummer. Or at least your kids can. This is a great Valentine's gift for older boys and as well girls. They get real drum sounds, cymbals, and "fill-in" to practice those moves without disturbing mom. Less than $20 on Amazon.com.
