Top Video Games of the Decade

How do you determine what are the best video games of the decade? Do you base their ranking on popularity, sales, or your own personal preference? As we transition into the second decade of the 21^st century much has been written about which video games were the front runners. There authors used a number of different measurements to arrive at their conclusion. The top ten video games of the decade vary from list to list, however there are a few stand outs that appear on a number of lists I reviewed. Since it is a well established belief that people vote with their money, I established this list of the top ten video games of the decade based upon video games sales volume.

Surprisingly, of all the 10 top video games of the decade, only one is less than one year old. The majority are three plus years and more. The creation of this list of the top 10 video games of the decade took over 10 years, 120 whole months, 520 weeks, 3,652 days, 87,672 hours, 5,260,320 60-second minutes, and analysis and playing time with thousands and thousands of videogames to make. What are the best video games of the decade?

Resident Evil appeared on 3 of the list as one of the top ten video games of the decade. Diablo, Half Life 2, and Shadows of the Colossus each made 2 appearances each on five of the lists I reviewed. Nintendo video games, including Wii products captured five of the available best video games of the decade slots based upon sales volume but did not receive even a whimper on any of the popularity poll list. The greatly publicized video games of the past few years, Guitar Hero, Grand Theft Auto, and Call to Duty all ranked high on the popularity poll best video game list but did not have sales volume to support their inclusion on the final list of the top video games of the decade.

The top 10 video games of the decade, based upon video game sales are;

Number 10 is Resident Evil 4, released in 2005

Number 9 is Sims, released in 2000

Number 8 is Diablo ll, also released in 2000

Number 7 is Wii Play, released in 2006. Over 24 million units were purchased.

Number 6 is Super Mario Brothers, released in 2006 also. Since their inception, the Mario Brothers have always appeared in the top ten videos sold every year.

Number 5 is a bit of a surprise. It is a Nintendo DS hand held console game. Released in 2006, over 20 million units of Nintendo Dogs were purchased. It is a virtual pet game.

Number 4 is another Wii product, Wii Fit, released in 2006.

Another Nintendo Wii product, Wii Sports holds the number 3 spot on the top ten video games of the decade with over 50 million units purchased.

The number two spot is held by Mario Kart Wii. Yet another Wii video game.

The number one top ten video game of decade is no surprise. With over 11 million monthly paying subscribers to the online version, World of Warcraft was the hands down favorite to be rated the number one top ten video game of the decade.

There you have it. Is it what you thought? My son Christopher and I each made our own list and then I did some research online. None of the video games Christopher and I selected even appeared in the list of the top 100 video games of the decade.
