The problem most people have is that they don't take their resolution seriously. A way to be more accountable is to put your resolution in writing, and consider at least 5 ways to keep it.
For example, resolution: Decrease Debt.
Move out of your safety zone
Attempt at least one thing new. For example, avoid spending money on fast food, liquor, drive less, take public transportation, use the local park for exercise versus buying a gym membership.
Inform others about your resolution.
Let your friends and co-workers know your resolution. Once everyone is aware of your plan to save money, you won't have to feel obligated to attend every lunch, event, concert, or party.
Get a hobby.
Volunteer, or get a hobby that doesn't cost anything. Idle time is the devil's time. Stay busy to avoid unnecessary spending.
Be a chameleon.
It's hard to break addictive behavior, whether it is smoking, eating, partying too much, or spending money. If you have a family member, or co-worker that you admire because they are successful at something; try to copy what they do. Seek advice from somebody who is doing what you want to do.
Don't give into temptation.
Stay focus on the big picture. If an item isn't a necessity, (food and shelter), don't spend the money. If you need to buy something try going to a second-hand store.
Review and continue.
Track your progress. Outline what worked or didn't work. Review resolution and continue with goal.
A resolution usually isn't a quick one-time fix, it's an ongoing project. In addition, resolutions can be made year round, if by mid 2009 problems occurs, make another resolution. Resolutions should be set to better yourself; therefore, there are a variety of options you can use to keep your resolution; including volunteering, seeking professional treatment, or taking educational classes.
