If you are among the many families who are forced to live on a small budget, you may feel that it is impossible to afford the things you may want, or need. Tracking your spending habits is just one way to get the amount of money you really want into your savings account. If you focus on tracking where every penny you spend goes you may in fact find it easier to save the money that you want, and need. Below are ten ways that you can go about tracking your spending habits.
Write down what you buy
Not everyone likes the idea of using a computer program to track their spending. If you are in this group it is useful to write down your purchases on a weekly basis. A notebook is a good way to keep track of your spending habits.
Work with a budget
If you set a budget, and stay within it, you will have an easier time tracking your spending habits. Your budget allows you to only spend a set amount, and does take plenty of willpower to accomplish, especially if you are a habitual spender.
Use a software program
If you enjoy using computer programs than it my be a good idea to find a software program that will keep track of your spending habits, and how much goes into savings each month. There is an abundance of programs to choose from but you don't want to choose one, that will clean out your savings. Look for an affordable program that has gotten some really good reviews.
File your receipts
Every time you come home from the store, you will bring home a receipt. It would make a lot of sense to create a filing system that will allow you to put your receipts away in an organized fashion. By filing your receipts you will be able to see exactly what you spend and where you may be wasting your money.
Weekly spending review
At the end of each week, you can take the time to review how much money you spent. You may be surprised at how much money can be wasted each week. Compare your receipts along with your computer software program, or your notebook system may help you to come up with a budget that is a bit more workable
Set spending priorities
Setting priorities when it comes to your spending habits will really help you to decide what you want to spend your money on. Doing this will help you to focus on the important things and leave out the little things that you tend to waste your money on.
Don't use credit cards
One thing that credit cards can do for a person is help them to overspend. Spending too much on your credit card can ruin you financial goals, which you may be trying to set for yourself.
