During the winter, those with children are probably mostly looking for indoor activities. However, I have outlined a mix of indoor and outdoor activities for this age group.
Monster Mini Golf located at 33 Lambert Lind Hwy (rte 5) Warwick RI
Ph: 401-921-5472. This is an indoor miniature golf course which is all glow in the dark, from the balls to the paintings and the outlines of the golf course. It is not so dark that you cannot see where you are going, but the effect of the black lights is awesome and children really love it. In addition, there are two rooms which can be booked for birthday parties and an arcade for those children that do not want to play the mini golf or in addition to the mini golf.
Regal Reptiles located at 425 Washington Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903
(401) 277-9000 is Rhode Island's only Reptile Zoo. This location is great fun for those that are reptile enthusiasts. There are over 400 reptiles and snakes. In addition, there is a daily show with an alligator which you can even pet, if you are brave enough. Check out their website link for more information.
Providence Children's Museum is located at 100 South Street in Providence RI. The winter hours are Tuesday - Sunday 9am-6pm and open during school vacations Monday holidays and until 8pm the third Friday evening of each month for "MetLife" Family Friday - Free at Five!" This museum has activities and hands-on exhibits that allow kids and parents to play together and learn. There are water-ways where the children can build pipes together to re-direct the water and learn damns and levies. Local history is outlined in a walk through exhibit where children (and parents) can learn about the immigrants that came to Rhode Island through the centuries.
In addition to the exhibits, there are activities at various times that are based around holidays and certain times of the year. There are also rooms that can be used for special community activities and have craft activities at various times. For more information visit their website.
Roger Williams Park Zoo is located in Providence, Rhode Island and has many varieties of animals. Although the winter is not a time that you would consider visiting the zoo, but they are open all year long. The page on the website detailing tips for visiting during the winter months is http://www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org/calendar/WinterTips.cfm
Showcase Cinemas located at 1200 Quaker Lane, Warwick RI (1200 Quaker Lane (401) 885-1621). This cinema has many family oriented programs including Kidtoons, Book Worm Wednesdays, and Reel Kool Birthday Parties.

I wish that Oklahoma City would allow for some of these winter activities. Most of our museums and stuff shuts down during the winter months. We don't even have a lot of these museums.
Nice ideas mama L :-)
I do the Monster Mini golf :) Sheri

The 6 to 10 set can be a hard age group to please, but these destinations sound like they would please most any pre-tweener!
