"Gran Torino" is Clint Eastwood's biggest hit in over a decade, even though it's not his best movie. Part of the appeal is the movie's endless, decidedly un p.c racial slurs, which will make the audience laugh. But what does that say about the audience?

Gran Torino is a movie about a man, Walt Kowalski, played with alacrity by Clint Eastwood, who has spent too long being disappointed by just about everything. We see him first, grim faced, at his wife's funeral.

Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" is out in wider release, and is already making box office waves. A surprising box office victory this weekend could give another boost to Eastwood's Best Actor Oscar campaign, for possibly his last role.

If Gran Torino is indeed Clint Eastwood's last film as he claims it is, then it is a simultaneously fitting yet disappointing to his great career.

Eastwood's Walt Kowalski came of age in the years when racist jokes, labels, and stereotypes were thrown about regularly and no one even batted an eyelash. There are many others like Walt, including my late grandfather.

At its core, Gran Torino is a familiar story in that it deals with a man in contact with people he does not fully understand but comes to love by the movie's end. But Easwood gives us a movie that feels anything but familiar.

Many Oscar-bait films come out in just a few theaters. That is especially annoying this year, as people like myself probably won't be able to see this year's remaining Oscar films until January.
