Ascites

Ascites is the accumulation of fluids within the peritoneal cavity inside of the abdomen. Fluid leaks into the peritoneal cavity from the liver and sometimes from the intestines.

If the cat owner notices its cat has a distended abdomen and there is no known reason for it, the vet should be contacted or visited because it could be ascites, which occurs when fluid accumulates in the abdomen.
