The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) was released on December 12, 2008 here in the United States market and is a remake of the 1951 version with the same title.

Remaking classic films, such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, is always a dubious proposition. Remakes smack of a lack of originality and tend to be less enjoyable to watch than the original film.

When the news that the classic SF film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, first came out, I speculated that the Cold War message of the original was going to be replaced by a War on Terror one. I was wrong. Klaatu has come to save the environment from us.

Director Scott Derrickson, who did the Exorcism of Emily Rose, will soon begin to film a remake of the classic SF film, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Upon learning of this news, there is one question that comes to mind. Why?

The Day that it Stopped....

It was with some reluctance that I took the time to watch the 2008 remake. While it was definitely better than the original, I just didn't see enough to make believe it wasn't a waste of my time.

Mildly entertaining with great special affects, but no match for its classic 1951 forerunner.
