Torino Espresso Bar coming to Ferndale

Ferndale may soon be home to a new espresso bar. The City Commission unanimously approved the plan proposed by Torino Espresso Bar to open the establishment in a corner space below the Nine Mile Lofts, located on Nine Mile about one block east of Woodward Avenue. Joel Dorfman believes his new business will draw people across Woodward, linking the east side of Nine Mile to the already established west side of Woodward.

Dorfman envisions an "authentic Italian café" experience by bringing an "Italian coffee culture" to Ferndale. Patrons will be able to order a variety of espresso and coffee, as well as breakfast, sandwiches and salads. Appetizers and deserts will be featured, as well. Dorfman also gained approval to serve wine and spirits.

Torino will seat a total of 94 patrons at a time, with a little more than one-third of the seating outdoors, and will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Being open late on the weekends elicited the only concern during public comment, that Torino not disturb the residents in the area, particularly living in the lofts above. However, Dorfman plans on down-tempo music and no crowd control problems considering the mature crowd the establishment will target.
