Tornado Destroys Alabama High School ; 8 Confirmed Dead in Enterprise

At least eight people have been confirmed dead in Enterprise, Alabama after a possible tornado ripped through the city. Also, at least five have been confirmed dead in Wilcox County. Included in the destruction was a high school, which still had students and staff inside. It has been confirmed that the deaths are from within the school, however it is not clear if the deaths are students or staff.

Yasamie Richardson, spokesperson with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, has confirmed that eight people died in the tornado that hit the high school.

Enterprise High School was severely damaged as the tornado moved through the southeast Alabama town. Students were inside the school when it was hit. According to several reports, students are still missing. It is unknown if they left the school before the storm hit or if they are still trapped beneath the debris.

Approximately fifty students have been treated at the local hospital (Enterprise Medical Center, which is a block and a half from the school), with injuries ranging from fractures, lacerations, chest pains due to anxiety and respiratory problems.

The school "appears to have been right in the path," said Paul Duval, meteorologist with National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Fla., which monitors southeast Alabama.

"All we have is some sketchy preliminary information and what we have learned so far is that there are injuries both in downtown Enterprise and the high school," he said.

Enterprise High School was dismissed at one o'clock (1:00pm) due to the expected weather events. The tornado hit around one-thirty (1:30pm). It is unknown why there was still students and staff inside the school.

According to several reports, the roof of the high school collapsed as well as cars and school buses have been overturned. It is also impossible to get to downtown Enterprise due to power lines down as well as debris.

Governor Bob Riley has said that he is sending one hundred National Guard troops into Enterprise to assist in the recovery efforts as well as the cleanup process.

Parents of students at Enterprise H.S. should go to Hillcrest Baptist Church to locate a student.

Around 4,000 people are without power in Enterprise according to Alabama Power.

Due to the destruction, a dusk till dawn curfew has been set for Enterprise.

Enterprise is located in the southeast corner of Alabama and is home to over 20,000.

The south, particularly Mississippi and Alabama, has been experiencing severe weather throughout the day Thursday.

It's almost been a year since the tornado hit the school. it's hard to believe that time has flown by so fast. not a day goes by that i don't think about that day. it was the most scariest thing i have ever been through. the superindenant and faculty made the right decison to keep us in the school longer. i have to agree with katie(who commented on this article), that if they would have dismissed us, who knows how many more fatalities would have occured. i think about our 8 classmates everyday and am able to smile because i know they are in a better place having a ball. (everyone here misses ya'll and loves you very much.) The Rachel Ray show hit everyone pretty hard. I watched it in senior english and walked out in tears. Our prom was awesome. I'm grateful that people we didn't even know lent us a hand and made the lasting days of our senior year amazing. Thank you to everyone that prayed for our town, gave donations, and helped clean up our city.

That was a very tramatic experience for all pf especially for the senior class. I was apart of that class and i can honestly say that that was one of the scariest moments of my life. We lost two students out of our senior class and they will not be forgotten yet they wiil be greatly missed along with the other students that we lost.

I just watch the Rachel Ray show that show the Prom for Enterprise High School, it was so moving that a community came together to help the Senior Class of 2007 has somewhat of a normal Prom experience. It is great to see that a community can come together like that, I am glad that the students had one last good memory before graduation day.
