A Woman Dies in Queens
The storm caused one fatality in Queens. A woman who was at the Grand Central Parkway near Jewel Avenue died after her car was hit by a tree.
The storm caused many huge trees to become uprooted all over the city. Some of the trees become airborne. Homes were damaged by trees and some buses and cars had the windows smashed out by trees that went flying through the air during the storm.
High Winds in NYC & Outlying Areas
Winds hit a high of 70 mph at Great Kills in Staten Island. This storm arrived suddenly and had some typical tornado signs. There were reports of the greenish tint to the sky sometimes seen as a tornado is approaching.
Hail and Horizontal Rain
Hail was reported in some areas of the city and outlying areas. Also, winds were so high that people also reported seeing "horizontal rain," notes the New York Post. This storm had some unusual features. It will be fascinating to see how the National Weather Service classifies it.
Commuters Crabby at Penn Station & on Subways
The storm caused delays on many train lines. Penn Station was jammed with crabby commuters who were delayed for their journey home due to the storm. Some subway lines also had significant delays during the storm. Stormy days are always tough for commuters. Let's hope everyone is home safe now.
Don't Ignore a Tornado Warning
Remember, if the news has announced a tornado warning take cover. It is not safe to be outside during a tornado. Go inside on the lowest floor and stay away from windows.

Post a CommentI also want to add that the National Weather Service offers free storm spotting classes in many areas. It never hurts to be informed.
As a kid I remember being amazed that my dad's family (Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island)didn't have major weather like we do. They had virtually no experience with power outages that last for days, tornadoes, bad thunderstorms etc. I'm sorry for the life that was lost but very glad that more people weren't hurt.
Update: 2 tornados confirmed in Brooklyn, Queens .. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39238600/ns/weather/
Good reporting!
Batten down the hatches, eh?
Never thought of tornadoes in NYC.
Great report. I'm all too familiar with tornadoes having grown up in Oklahoma.
I didn't know someone died! Natural disasters previously restricted to certain areas of the country are starting to happen anywhere, it seems.
Wow, very unusual, thanks for this report Julia!
