Jay Harrison spent three full seasons with the Brampton Batallion in the OHL. In 2001, Jay Harrison was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs, 82nd overall. Harrison started out the 2001-2002 season with the Brampton Batallion but was moved to the AHL (American Hockey League) towards the end of the season. The AHL is a league in which players who have been drafted or are likely to be drafted play in to develop their skills and the NHL often calls up players from this league. Jay Harrison was moved to the St. John's Maple Leafs, and played seven games with them, but was moved to the Memphis Riverkings, a CHL team, before the end of the season. He never actually played with the Memphis Riverkings. In 2002, Jay Harrison played for Canada in the World Juniors.
In the 2002-2003 season, Jay Harrison was back with the St. John's Maple Leafs in the AHL. Harrison spent three full seasons with the St. John's Maple Leafs. In the beginning of the 2005-2006 season, Jay Harrison played with the Toronto Marlies, another AHL team. He spent the majority of the season with the Marlies, but was called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs to play with them in the NHL towards the end of the season. He only played eight games with the Toronto Maple Leafs before the season ended.
Despite ending the season with the Toronto Maples Leafs, Jay Harrison was put back in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies at the beginning of the 2006-2007 season. He was again called up by the Toronto Maples Leafs towards the end of the season, and played five games with them. In the 2007-2008 season, Jay Harrison spent the entire hockey season with the Toronto Marlies back in the AHL. For the 2008-2009 season, Jay Harrison decided to try another route, he signed a one year contract with EV Zug to play in the NL-A (National League A). The NL-A is a professional league in Switzerland. Although he signed for one year, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Jay Harrison to play for them the rest of the 2008-2009 season.
