Torrential Downpour Continues in Central Oklahoma

Robert Cole
Norman, Oklahoma -- After a short break in the rainfall in the past few days, Oklahoma City and surrounding cities like Norman and Moore are experiencing further flooding today. More rain and thunderstorms are expected over the course of the upcoming week. Here in Norman, the earth is already saturated with water and many of the streets are filling up fast from the sudden downpour that started earlier in the evening. Driving around has become a slow and tedious process with water collecting dangerously high in some places.

A football field outside is quickly becoming a lake, ruining practice for an elementary school team nearby. I'm sure rush hour will be an extra hour long today for commuters, and I hope Oklahomans have some rainy day activities planned for the night, because the rain doesn't look like it's going anywhere too soon. Then again, you never know what Oklahoma weather can stir up.

The rain has been off and on sporadically for several weeks now which has made it difficult to make any plans. But today, the rain is falling fast and relentless. When I went to pick up my sister from daycare today, one man complained about how the unpredictable weather rained out yet another one of his son's baseball games.

Along with the current economic climate, the real climate is not adding to any positive attitudes here in Norman either. Trying to find work is twice as troubling with a constant torrent of rain and lightning overhead. No one likes rainy weather or the ear numbing thunder that Oklahoma is known for but with a little luck and time, maybe the sun will peek out again and give us some warmer weather before winter sets in which, at this point, would be a wonderful transition from the wet and windy quagmire that has become of much of central Oklahoma. But in the words of Oklahoma's Will Rogers: "If you don't like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it'll change."

Sure enough, just as I wrote that the rain let up and the birds started chirping. The weather is turning around already, and hopefully so will the collective mood in Norman. Winter is just around the corner, and if the past is any indication, it's likely to be just as unpredictable as the other three seasons here in the state. But regardless of what storms or severe weather heading our way, it won't be anything we haven't seen before.
