Tortilla Flats is certainly not a fancy establishment. Located in an old fire station, the booths are uncomfortable wood and the tables are much of the same. There is of course a large bar serving up all types of alcohol especially Margarita's and Sangria. Tortilla Flats is pretty loud on most occasions so if you are looking for a quiet and comfortable spot to have dinner this might not be the place. However if you are looking for a fun place with great Mexican food and drinks then this is the place to be.
The food tastes authentic however for those of you who love Mexican but have friends who don't, there are options for them too. For appetizers, their guacamole is fabulous as are the homemade chips! If you prefer something a bit more unique the coconut shrimp is also to die for.
All of their entrees are amazing. If you are unsure of what you want, try the combination plates. You can select 2 or 3 traditional Mexican dishes such as tacos, enchiladas, burritos or tamales. Another great menu selection is the steak fajitas. The meat is deliciously marinated and served with the traditional tortillas and a cucumber salad and Mexican rice. Chimichungas also seem to be a popular selection. Looking for something vegetarian? The Harvest Burrito is delectable but the menu at Tortilla Flats also states that most anything with meat can be substituted for veggies. For something different try the Louisiana Alligator or the Crawdads.
For those of you who prefer something a little less Mexican, the Citrus Shrimp Kabobs are wonderful and light. The Conquistador might have a name that would lead you to believe it is something traditionally Mexican but it is a grilled chicken breast with cheese and sour cream. There is also an option for BBQ ribs and of course plenty of burgers on the menu along with chicken and pulled pork sandwich options.
For dessert if you are at a Mexican restaurant the one option that should never be turned down is fried ice cream and Tortilla Flats offers some of the best! If you like cinnamon and chocolate flavors and can resist some ice cream you cannot go wrong. A giant scoop of vanilla ice cream rolled in a cinnamon cornflake mix and deep-fried and then sprinkled with chocolate sauce and whipped cream can never be bad. Of course there are other options but why would you waste your time! Have this with a Mexican coffee and you will barely be able to walk out the door.
Tortilla Flats is very reasonably priced. There is not an entrée on the menu for more than $14 and most range from $8-$10. If you are looking for an affordable yet delicious place to have Mexican in Rhode Island then be sure to stop by Tortilla Flats.
