Torturing the Maid with Nails

Julie Wimmer
A Sri Lankan maid, Lahadapurage Daneris Ariyawathie, was in surgery for three hours this past Friday August 27th to have eighteen 1-3 inch nails and pieces of metal removed from her body. The nails and metal pieces were located in her legs, arms and forehead.

The maids employers, unnamed at this time, are originally from Saudi Arabia. They hired Ariyawathie, apparently, through an official agency. Sri Lankan officials have apparently met with Saudi diplomats to urge that this incident be pursued and the couple punished.

According to reports, the wife held the maid down while the husband hammered heated nails into her body. Apparently Ariyawathie had complained that the work was too much, and the couple thought they could punish her for that in.

Ariyawathie's two children were originally unhappy she was moving to Saudi Arabia for that job. It is not a new fact that house-workers have been abused and overworked because of a "lack of government regulation and protective laws." Most of these workers are very poor and need these jobs no matter the circumstances.

Compensation has been mentioned, and possibly sending Ariyawathie back home to Sri Lanka to be with her family.
