The Poftege R500 is incredibly thin and easy weighted, but offers all the advantages a previous version, double the size offers. It is available in two versions, single or dual spindle.
The single spindle version weights only about 779 grams, with approx. 100 grams less than the latest single spindle models available on the market today. It is also, the first Toshiba notebook that contains a SSD (Solid State Drive) of 64GB. The Solid State Drives offer the following advantages: that they can take better shocks and vibrations, have a lower energy usage rate, and also have a greater read speed.
The dual spindle model, of the Portege R500 includes the first 7mm optic drive, a characteristic that allows the device to remain in the ultra portable category, raising at the same time its efficiency. Including a DVD-SuperMulti optical drive, in a 19.5mm device removes the idea of carrying extra peripherals in order to make the notebook more accessible, this makes the Toshiba the most reliable solution when regarding to portable devices.
Despite its small size, the Portege R500 notebook was designed to the latest detail with the purpose of offering the latest technology when regarding to data security, and data protection. It provides fingerprint authentication, a water resistant keyboard, integrated hard drive protection against falls, magnesium case, and a compact motherboard.
Added to that, both versions, single spindle and dual spindle offer a high performance battery, which allow the user to keep the laptop working for up to 12.5 hours until recharge.
In order to obtain such an ultra compact look, Toshiba used the High Density Mounting Technology process, which was also developed by them. This technology was used in order to create a miniaturized motherboard on which components can be mounted on both sides. The usage of this technology allowed reducing substantially the size of the motherboard, and also improving functionality: in the remaining space a 7mm optical drive was included. The motherboard of the Portege R500 is 35% smaller than the one of its predecessor the Portege R200.
With the two Portege R500s Toshiba hopes to achieve a market breakthrough, showing competition and clients that in order to offer high performance it is not always necessary to sacrifice other issues such as size, weight or aspect.
