Totally Gnarly Sayings and Words from the 80's & 90's

Juliegirl
Take a stroll down memory lane with me as we look at some totally awesome words and gnarly sayings we have used over the years.

First we will look at words and sayings made popular in the 1980's. Some of these words were used in the 90's and even some still used today.

Gnarly. "That was so gnarly." This word basically meant good or great.

Sweet. "That corvette is sweet." Sweet used in this way usually means awesome are really great. This word is still used today.

Bad. "That was one bad movie." This word is funny because it actually means the opposite. When someone says something is "bad" they mean it was good.

Rad. Rad basically is a shortened form of the word Radical.

Awesome or Totally Awesome. This word was used in the 80's and 90's and is even used a lot today. This saying actually means what it says.

Cool. I think this word has been around probably the longest. I remember saying this word in High School. "Cool" means something really great or something that you like. For example, "Your shirt is so cool!"

It does seem a lot of words just carry over from year to year. As I am writing this I keep remembering words that we use now days that I used back in the 90's. One such word or phrase you still hear today and that we used back in the 90's is "As if." "As if " is basically saying you would never do something or something is not true.

The Bomb. "That car is the bomb!" Another word meaning awesome, cool, great. etc. You get the picture.

Bite me. Okay, I do think I have been guilty of saying this. To me in saying this you are being sarcastic and telling someone you just don't care.

Gross or Gross me out: I so remember saying this when I was young. Everything back then was "gross" or I was "grossed out".

Some phrases and words I remember hearing off of tv and movies. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that is where all of these words and phrases originated. One phrase I remember from a show was when a "valley girl" said "Gag me with a spoon." You might also remember, "Like put me on a roller coaster and watch me throw up." Other popular words and phrases from the 80's are: chillin', take a chill pill (okay I still say this), cool beans, and tubular.

The 90's introduced us to a few new words and phrases. Trust me, while researching this and remembering times past I remembered a lot of words and phrases that were used in the 90's that I will skip in the article. So, if you know of a saying that was used and it was omitted, you can bet it was omitted on purpose.

"He was all that and a bag of chips." I do not know where this originated but I remember hearing it and even saying it. I think it is still used some today. Probably like every other trend in America words and phrases always come back around.

Back in the 90's your diamonds and necklaces were called Bling, Bling. Now, in the 2000's we have dropped one of the blings and just say "Bling." "He was wearing a lot of bling." In the 90's "crib" went from a baby's bed to a person's home. Bugg'n became a popular saying for saying someone is/was freaking out.

Also in the 90's "chica" was the new word for "chick," while "chick flick" meant a movie for the girls. Some other popular words in the 90's that are still used today (think Randy Jackson from American Idol) are dawg and dope.

Other sayings that I remember from the 90's was "don't go there" and "get over it." Of course they are still widely used today.

That's it for now! I hope this article gave you a little trip down memory lane. I imagine we have all said a few of these words, or more, at one time or another. So, until next time. Later dude!
