Description
This book is 12 cardboard pages long including both the front cover and the book cover. The cover of the book had the title written in different colors. In the title the words BABY ANIMALS are all capitalized and each letter is written in different colors, such as yellow, red, blue, pink, and green. Each part of this book has a learning opportunity. The front cover shows a picture of a rabbit with a small hole cute out where your child can feel the fur of the rabbit. The rabbit is grey and is eating lettuce. In the background behind the rabbit are two yellow ducks but you can't feel their feathers. On the top of this picture shows two more animals eating hay. You can't feel those either.
You open the book and first see the same rabbit that was on the front cover. Here again you can feel they grey soft fur the rabbit has. You can also see three more rabbits, one white and two grey. They are sitting on some straw or hay but you can't feel those. This book invites you too see and stroke the soft baby rabbit.
The next page shows three brown elephants. You can actually feel two out of the three elephants. Their skin is brown and feels like leather. You can feel the skin of the baby elephant's ears. They tell you the texture is rough.
You turn the page to find four yellow ducklings. Now they give you the opportunity to feel two out of the three ducklings. They are fluffy and soft. It looks like two of them are talking to each other. You can pretend with your child and come up with something they might be saying.
Next we have three calves. One is brown, one is a darker brown, and one is spotted brown and white. We can only feel the lighter brown calf. His is smooth and velvety to touch. The two calves that you can't touch are eating hay. The other one is looking straight at the reader.
The last page shows two baby gorillas. They are dark brown and have furry fur. My son like to call them monkeys and says "Ooh ooh aah aah". He likes to imitate the sounds of a monkey. The book asks the reader to tickle the furry baby gorilla. The two baby gorillas are looking directly at the reader. The one baby gorilla that you can touch looks like he just finished eating grapes. Here you can ask your child what they think a gorilla might eat in addition to eating grapes.
On the back cover you see one elephant and one calf. You can't feel these though. It looks like the elephant is talking to the calf. Maybe here again you can role play what they might be talking about.
My experience
This book costs $6.99 USA and $9.99 Canada. We received this book as a present and have been enjoying it ever since. I even took this book to read to my students in middle school. They got a kick out of the way you can actually touch and feel the animals.
I would highly recommend this wonderful book. I have now read it to my two year old son as well as my 14 year old students. There is so much you can do with this book. The reader just has to use their imagination. I hope you enjoy reading this book to your child as much as my husband and I do.
