This excellent A+ film could also be called the modern-day "Karate Kid" although the races were reversed given the fact that Eastwood was the natural born American citizen teaching this young Asian/American teenager how to build certain things, comical guy talk and even how to "stand up to the big guys!" whenever they are harassing you.
Eastwood plays the part as grumpy old Walt Kowalski whom has lived in Highland Park Michigan for decades with his wife that recently passed away at the beginning of the film showing the church eulogy with his family members. Apparently, Walt and his son's never seemed to be very close, his son's were depicted as being mama's "spoiled rotten" brats that never took on any responsibility in life? Or could it have been that Walt was a stubborn and hateful Korean war veteran old mule and also retired Ford plant worker excellently portrayed by Eastwood in this film?
The neighborhood where Walt lives is now basically residents of Asian Americans called Hmongs, descendent's of Thailand from 1975 because of the Vietnam War (or also called "conflict" because it was never legally declared a war). After his wife died, he spends most of his days just sitting on the front porch of his small white house smoking Camel cigarettes and drinking Pasbt Blue Ribbon beer trying to mind his own business.
The Hmong family next door called the Lor's are a peaceful and loving Asian/American people that anyone would love to meet in today's American society simply because of their kindness and respect for other human beings. They also know their next door neighbor's Walt's wife has recently died keeping their volume of loudness at a low level out of respect, which I believe that Eastwood may have known this as an excellent director which this simple film script if primarily based on.
Old Walt's Asian neighbors seem to have a lot of peaceful family gatherings, consisting of more food than you could possibly imagine! Until one day this Hispanic gang shows up and tries to cause problems? Walt tries to turn his head the other way? but has no choice but to interfere going next door with his historic Korean rifle and chases off this sometimes violent neighborhood gang.
Walt, is later on recognized in the Hmong community as being a hero! Placing food continuously on his door step. Walt tells them "No More, just leave me alone!" But later decides this food is great!. (This part could only be played by Eastwood and no one else in acting/director history).
The Hmong gang decides they want to initiate the shy teenage Thao, the leaders gang is his cousin by convincing him to steal Walt's 1972 Gran Torino Sport in his garage, but Walt hears a sound in his garage, and chases off this burglar who later on confesses to be Thao, his teenage next door neighbor, which Walt comically called him "Toad" until the very end of the story.
To save face in this Asian community, the Lor family tells their next door neighbor Walt, they want Thao to work with him for the next two weeks "Free of Charge", which begins the adventure of the Karate Kid in a short way. But, unfortunately this method does not last that long because the local gangs interfere causing violent problems. "78 year old Walt (Clint Eastwood) ironically beats the crap out of one of the gang leaders with his fist" and thus the story begins.
This could possibly be Clint Eastwood's final farewell film to Hollywood because of the ending of this story? If he makes anymore films, it will be truly amazing! Because of his age and looks. His health seems to be absolutely "Incredible" for a man his age. He also shows his love for his family members over the years. Two of his sons, Scott and Kyle, played a big part in the making of this movie.
