Tougher Jon Stewart Obama Jokes May Signal Collapse of Remaining Vestiges of Obama Support

Marc Schenker
Tougher Jon Stewart jokes against Obama may just signal the collapse of the remaining vestiges of support the president usually enjoys. Normally popular among his ferociously committed, liberal base that is represented among the late-night riffraff and their bizarre audiences (who can't even tell that hosts like Jon Stewart aren't really newscasters), Obama of late has come in for slightly more-heavy-than-normal ridicule among hosts like Jon Stewart, who mercilessly (and some would say traitorously) delighted in eroding war support for eight years under Bush by continually making fun of Iraq's progress. To be clear, though, while the "tougher" barbs from Stewart are still much, much, much more loving than anything he and his ilk fiercely threw at Bush for several years, they just may, nevertheless, signal an upcoming sea change in Obama's support even from liberals, a final collapse of support, maybe even??

To put this in context, we're not talking a complete, hardcore movement among late-night comics to crucify Obama as they did with Bush...because they're still a bunch of extremely partisan ideologues, you see. Nay, with Obama, Stewart's jokes are hardly cutting, but the real prognosticator of things to come with regards to Obama's support from even his normally loyal base of liberals is the fact that Stewart is cracking wise at all about his Great Leader.

A very vivid, recent example of this slight, but potentially, still growing collapse of support among even Obama supporters is Stewart's mocking of Obama's recent teleprompter stupidity before a sixth-grade class. You'll all remember that Obama found the sixth-graders, apparently, sooooo intimidating that he felt he needed to give them the most professional, sure-fire, no-fail presentation...by robotically reading to small pre-teens off of a teleprompter. Apparently, even to diehard Obama defenders like Stewart, this seemed too embarrassing to let slide.

Now, months ago, Stewart, being the reliable Obama brown-noser that he is, wouldn't have even touched a joke like that against Obama. Though, that was many months before the seemingly endless list of Obama missteps-whether related to actual policy like Obamacare or mere off-the-record stupidity like launching a war against FNC-likely has caused his liberal supporters like Stewart to start asking out loud in mouth-agape astonishment, Just who in the heck did we end up voting for?????

In context, again, this may be written off by the remaining twenty-percenters (derogatory term for true-believing Obama supporters who, while in the minority, still think he's doing a "swell" job) as something that just naturally happens when a president gets mired in worsening political problems, but even other, outside sources are beginning to note this seeming trend in comedians like Stewart beginning to perhaps, just perhaps, turn on Obama to the extent that even his support among his base collapses.

Indeed, conservatives like Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol are even speculating that Stewart may be a "crypto-neocon" finally "coming out of the closet," and liberal standard-bearers like Americablog's John Aravosis have even criticized Stewart for unfairly slamming Obama for unimportant issues to move more to the center than what his actual position is.

While it's too early to tell with definitive certainty that this may be more writing on the wall for Obama, it merely confirms a movement among Democrats and liberals in recent times to start expressing their dissatisfaction with Obama's failure to deliver on promises sold to them during his campaign. In example, MSNBC (who no one above age 15 probably watches with seriousness) has had Olbermann, Maddow and Schultz all take shots at Barry (yes, little, tiny baby-shots, but significant still due to the fact that they're taking them at all). And a president who's already viewed badly by Republicans and independents cannot afford to have his remaining vestiges of liberal support collapse...or else it's completely curtains for him!

The hangover is always proportional to the drunkeness. It was unbelievable--a teleprompter before 6th graders. Frankly, I think he's in love with that prompter.

    Finally!

I loved Jon Stewart until he was so liberal that it made me sick. Love Colbert!

I knew Pres. Obama would get creamed eventually. The higher they build them up, the harder they knock them down.

Its funny how you mention that the his audience doesn't realize that Jon Stewart is not a real newscaster, but you fail to do so yourself. He hosts a show on Comedy Central! The whole point is to jokes about relevant politics. Even if everything was great would they still find something to make fun of regardless of which political stance they take.
