Toughest Tongue Twister in the English Language

It Isn't Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Peppers

Michele Starkey

We grew up reciting tongue twisters such as "She sells sea shells down by the sea shore" and "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers; a peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked -- " but what is the toughest tongue twister of them all? I turned to the Guinness World Record Book to find my answer.

For the past 60 years, folks around the globe have turned to the Guinness Book of World Records to see who has the largest, fastest, shortest, tallest, smallest or strangest gadget, fruit, vegetable or condition.

It all began in England when Sir Hugh Beaver wondered what the fastest game bird in Europe was and when a heated debate ensued, he realized the millions of questions around the globe that were going undocumented. By 27 August 1955, the first edition of "The Guinness Book of Records" was unveiled and quickly became Britain's number one bestseller.

So, what does The Guinness Book of World Records have to say about the toughest tongue twister in the English language?

The "sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick" is said to be the toughest tongue twister in the English language.

According to a study in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, there seems to be a correlation between sleep apnea and tongue exercises. Incorporating certain tongue exercises into your sleep routine may help reduce the problems associated with apnea and help you sleep more soundly. You can read a summary on WebMD here.

Instead of counting sheep perhaps we should be discussing the health of the sheik's sheep.

It doesn't take much to twist my tongue.
