History Of Craigdarroch Castle

The Castle was built between 1887-1890 for Scottish immigrant Robert Dunsmuir. Dunsmuir became one of the richest men in Western Canada who made his fortune from Vancouver Island coal. Construction of the castle began in 1887 and wasn't completed until 1890. Unfortunately in April 1889 Robert Dunsmuir died. Robert's wife Joan, with their three unmarried daughters and two orphaned grandchildren, took up residence in 1890. Joan Dunsmuir died in 1908 having lived in Craigdarroch for 18 years.
