Touring the White House Online: WhiteHouse.gov

Kerry Mulherin
One may wonder where President Bush is hiding these days. Hillary Clinton's ongoing rivalry with Barack Obama is everywhere you look, and John McCain's activities seemingly take a backseat while the former two are yet again having a polite feud over tax documents and who lied about what. And where is Mrs. Bush?

President Bush has been out of the limelight in comparison, but when visiting the official White House web site, much can be seen and learned about his latest activities. Not being the politically savvy type, one may wonder where to start reading. After all, who understands such jargon, and what is global diplomacy all about anyway?

I am glad you asked.

Got Questions?

At the White House web site, one can choose an issue of interest, read about it and then ask a question of an official for clarification on any part of the documentation you didn't understand. You can also get transcripts of chats and suggest a person you would like to speak at the "Ask The White House" interactive forums. Current topics can be read, or there are archives to wade through if you need more information on another topic.

Mrs. Bush:

There is also information pertaining to Mrs. Bush and you are able to view her biography. Visit her to see the great community projects she has been working on and tune in to a Radio address where she is promoting awareness for the Heart Truth and Red Dress campaigns.

Vice President and Mrs.Cheney also have links on the site.

Video Tours:

Although politics may not be everyone's favorite topic, the White House and its history is quite fascinating. I was in awe when I took the opportunity to go on a guided virtual tour of this magnificent establishment which was hosted by President Bush. It is full of history and the videos tours available provided so much more interesting content than I expected to see.

President Bush spoke informally about different features of the Oval Office for example, making reference to memorable events and areas where photographs were taken, such as the time where little John John Kennedy ran about the office peering through the windows while hanging out with Dad, President John F. Kennedy. I have to say my favorite parts of the photo essays and all videos were any at all which contained Kennedy information.

Past Presidents:

There are some excellent photographs of past Presidents and their beautiful First Ladies, and a full list of those who have been honored with the title of President of The United States. When cruising the list, simply select a President by clicking his photo. You will then be able to read a short summary of facts or click to read a full page biography. This is a great study guide for kids, or for those like myself who are learning all about America and it's history since relocating from another country. There is so much to be learned from this amazing website. And, if you still have time after getting lost in the beautiful photographs and video footage for a couple of hours, you can sift through the links to Presidential Libraries throughout the country.
