Beaches in Durban
Many high-rise hotels are built along Durban's beachfront. Begin your visit with a stroll along the Marine Parade and browse through the curios that line the street. Traditional rickshaw rides are available and the pullers and their elaborately adorned carts are worth photographing. There are several paddling pools along the beachfront and these are colourful and appealing to children.
Ushaka Marine World in Durban
Ushaka Marine World was completed in 2004 and has become one of Durban's top tourist attractions. The theme park includes pools and waterslides, the fifth largest aquarium in the world, over 80 stores and restaurants, a beach and grass area, a special kids' area for 2 to 12 year olds and the Dangerous Creatures reptile house that includes spiders, frogs, lizards and snakes.
Shopping in Durban
Durban has a fine mix of shopping areas with something to appeal to all tastes. The city centre is home to chain stores and some large department stores. The Victoria St Market is an exciting blend of Indian and African wares and dates back to the late 1800's. Over 170 stalls offer materials, beaded goods, spices, incense, food items and African curios. Big malls within driving distance from Durban include The Pavilion in Westville, and Gateway near Umhlanga Rocks. Gateway has a floor space of 425,000 square feet and is the 8th largest center of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It offers a mix of shopping and entertainment and attractions include an IMAX theater, cinemas, indoor rock climbing, a playhouse, over 60 restaurants, an arcade and a science theme park.
Safety in Durban
Like other parts of South Africa, there are safety issues to be considered in Durban. Problems include gangs of street children and thugs that wander along the beachfront. Although there is a police presence there, the crime levels are still high. It is best to walk in groups and don't display cameras, cell phones and other valuable items on your person. Avoid isolated areas and don't leave belongings unattended on the beaches.
Durban in South Africa is a wonderful place to soak up the sun and enjoy the warm Indian Ocean. For the more adventurous, there are plenty of tours available as well as a choice of fine food, and beautiful botanic gardens to stroll through. It is the type of place that needs an extended stay to enjoy all it has to offer.
