Sentosa is a beautiful part of Singapore and attracts millions of visitors each year. It can be accessed by car, bus, train, light rail and cable car. Once on the island there is a choice of tourist attractions to visit.

What to See and Do on Sentosa Island

There are guided tours of the island available or tourists can find their own way around and visit attractions of their choice. Some of the favorite spots include the following:

• Sentosa Island offers 3.2 kilometres of white sandy beach complete with palm trees. With the year-round warm weather, these are an ideal place to relax. Activiries available include beach volleyball, waveriding, cycling, rollerblading and kayaking.

• Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom is an outdoor attraction that displays butterflies in a natural rainforest environment. Watch as they flutter over waterfalls and come to rest on tables of fruit. The indoor section incorporates Insect Kingdom and there are hundres of insects and butterflies on display along with interetsing facts about their history.

• The Jewel Cable Car ride extends from mainland Singapore to Sentosa Island. Each cable car can hold 8 and the ride takes approximately 12 minutes. A special VIP car is decorated with Swarovski crystal and has a glass floor and leather seats. The views are amazing and the ride gives a good perspective of the surrounding areas.

• Underwater World and Dolphin Lagoon is an oceanarium that includes an 83 metre long glass tunnel that passes through the centre of a giant tank. Visitors are offered an interactive experience and are able to feed the fish, shake hands with dolphins and fur seals and for an extra fee, they can swim with the dolphins and sharks.

• The cabin around the Tiger Sky Tower rises to 131 metres above sea level. This is equivalent to just under 50 storeys high and offers panoramic views across Singapore. On a clear day, visitors can see as far as Malaysia and Indonesia. The cabin holds up to 71 people and revolves slowly as it ascends meaning everyone gets a full view.

• The Merlion is an icon of Singapore and a giant 37 metre tall model stands on Sentosa Island. Visitors can enter the statue and climb to the crown for spectacular views. The interior of the Merlion is a recreation of the ocean depths and incorporates seas dragons and mermaids.

• The Skyline Luge is a type of cart ride that winds down the hillside. Choose from the Jungle Trail or the Dragon's Tail. The carts hold one person each and are simple to control. The ride is suitable for children and adults.

• Sentosa 4D Magix is an interactive cinema experience that includes visual effects, sound, motion, water features and wind. The chairs move and make the viewer feel as though they are part of the movie. Visitors can choose from Pirates, Extreme Log Ride and Desperado.

• MegaZip Adventure Park is an aerial rope course that offers extras such as a flying fox, freefall simulator and wobbly bridges. There are courses that are suitable for children and others that are more extreme for adrenalin junkies. Participants wear a harness and are attached to cables throughout the course for their own safety.

Sentosa Island is a fascinating place with a wide range of attractions. Some visitors prefer to take a guided tour of the island while others like to discover the sights for themselves. For those who want to spend a few days exploring, there are several hotels and resorts on the island.
