Tourist Guide for Visiting Fire Island, New York

James W. Coates
Fire Island, with miles of coastline, sandy beaches and natural surroundings, offers an oasis from the madness of Manhattan. Considered one of the world's most beautiful beaches, the island is home to thriving ecosystems containing diverse plants and native and migrating wildlife.

Located only 60 miles the city, this federally protected area, officially known as the Fire Island National Seashore, caters to both families as well as singles, and gays who swarm the area during summer months to enjoy the relaxation of sand dunes, white beaches, camping, hiking trails, hotels, restaurants, nude beaches as well as several drinking holes into 32 miles.

Fire Island Activities

Because of its proximity and easy access from New York City, day trips to Fire Island are common. The beautiful scenery and miles of boardwalks and natural trails makes hiking one of the most popular things to do. Since Fire Island does not permit cars on most parts of the island, you can easily forget the city's noise pollution and lose yourself on a stroll along the island's intricate weave of boardwalks.

The Fire Island Lighthouse is popular with families. Take the scenic boardwalk from Robert Moses State Park to the lighthouse to enjoy exhibits and interpretive programs as well as discovery trails. While there, explore the Lighthouse Beach.

Other popular activities on Fire Island include beach combing, bird watching, boating, camping, fishing and hiking.

Hotels and Camping on Fire Island

While hotels cater to many tourists who plan to spend a night, don't expect high rise towers or any chains. The beauty of Fire Island comes from its limited development and quaint yet rustic hotels. Summer rentals remain popular among city dwellers that plan to frequent the island on a regular basis.

Permitted camping on Fire Island is restricted to family areas and group campgrounds at Watch Hill, or with a permit at the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness and Smith Point County Park.

Fire Island for Gay and Lesbian Tourists

Long considered a haven for the Gay and Lesbian community, lively nightlife begins at The Pines. The Tea Dance begins at 5pm at the Blue Whale. Enjoy fruity cocktails, sultry music and long summer evenings on the patio before heading upstairs to the Pavilion for High Tea. Each weekend, summer parties stretch into the early hours and special parties occur thought the summer season.

Getting to Fire Island

Round trip train fare costs approximately. Take the The Long Island Rail Road from Manhattan to either Sayville or Bay Shore. Park your car and get the summer shuttle to the Fire Island Ferry. Ferry Tickets cost around $14. Fees are collected on the return trip.
