Things to Help You Choose the Safest Toys for Infants

There are toys that are made for every stage of childhood. You will find toys that are designed for infants, some of which are made so that a baby can play with them the moment they take an interest to reach for, grab or hold onto the toy, and you will find toys for children all of the years past infancy up until a child is a teenager. It is for this reason that it is important to make sure that the toys that you are selecting for your baby and important to make sure that the toys that your infant is receiving are the best toys for them. Thankfully there are several ways that you can be sure that the toys that your little baby is playing with will not do your son or daughter harm.

One of the very first things that you can do to determine if a toy is a good thing for your infant to have is to look at the recommended age for the toy. These ages displayed on the packaging of a rattle or other infant toy are there for a reason, they are not so much a suggestion but rather a safety statement. It is very easy to be eying a certain toy that has Ages 2+ on it when your baby is approaching nine months and already eager to play with all of the toys that they are getting their hand on with much ease. However there is a reason that this toy as not labeled with Ages 9 Months + and that people will actually want to air on the side of caution and maybe even wait until their baby is older than nine months to introduce that toy. Of course every child is different as is every toy so there are always going to be exceptions. When in doubt though take that age label as a strict guideline of when you can introduce a toy your child.

Now the recommended age label is not the only thing that you can go off of. It doesn't matter if a toy has an appropriate age label if the toy is poorly made. That is why it is extremely important to see that your baby only plays with well made toys. Unlike an older child a baby is going to have no understanding of whether or not a part of a toy should go in their mouth or not. As infants they are already mouthing everything and if they can mouth the entire toy their logic is that it is fine to continue mouthing even if a part of the toy has detached. Everything from rattles with small pieces inside to books with beads can be a major choking hazard for a baby if these toys are not properly made. It is best to choose toys from brands that you trust for their quality craftsmanship if there are any small pieces involved.

Another very important thing that you can do to make sure that your child has the safest toys for them is to choose natural materials. Plastics are the mainstream material of choice for toys for all ages but plastics do not occur naturally in nature and they are created with the use of many unnatural substances. Wood and cloth are both a much better choice. Natural wood is best, save the painted ones for when your baby is older and even then choose wooden toys with non-toxic paints. Cloth ideally should be organic and all components of the wooden and cloth toys should be well constructed.
