Toy Story 3 Video Game Review for Wii, PS3 and XBox 360

A Surprisingly Unique Movie Tie-in Game About America's Favorite Toys...

J G Hodnette
Toy Story 3 has already found its way into people's hearts and Pixar would be happy if the same became true of the video game released to accompany the game. This platforming video game combines the elements of classic platforming and some action-adventure questing. If you love Toy Story or want a light-hearted game to enjoy, this may be the answer for you!

Story Mode

The game includes a story mode that is much like any movie-tie in platformer. Characters get to use special abilities to solve simple puzzles while you journey through 9 short levels. The controls feel as though the could have been fine tuned a little better--jumping is delayed and makes for some frustrating moments. The abilities of the characters (Woody has a lasso, for example) are fun, but the poor camera angles and annoying placement of enemies make the levels a bit of a disappointment more often than not. Besides that, the story mode is extremely short overall. You could probably get through it in about four hours or so.

Sandbox Mode

Where is the game is really saved is in the clever sandbox mode. Based on Woody's wild west world, in this mode you spend time in a sandy western style area full of lego locals who give you a number of quests to complete. With a free-roam style of playing, sandbox mode gives you a completely non-platformer experience for a wonderful change from the classic platforming model. The quests vary from basic scavenger hunts, to races, to even stopping some bank robbers.

After you complete each mission, your receive coins which you can use to start upgrading your town. Buy new buildings, get new characters for you city, and soon your town will grow into a thriving metropolis! As you pass milestones, new big upgrades appear. This gives you an excellent sense of accomplishment as your tiny town starts filling up with lots of fun things to do and see. There is a good amount to customize in this town of your as well, if that is something you enjoy. You'll get a number of little gadgets to play around with such as a camera and a pickaxe for mining for gold. The only real drawback of this mode is that it is a pretty small area, really, and things can get repetitive if you're not careful.

Conclusion

Toy Story 3 is a video game that has a few surprises that overcome some of its more obvious problems. It is a game that can be a lot of fun for someone of any age, but its short length make it an unsuitable choice for someone looking for a serious game.
