Toy Story Character Halloween Costume Sewing Patterns

Sew Your Own Toy Story Halloween Costume

Susan Ott
The Toy Story movies have been a big hit for over a decade now, and with Toy Story 3 just hitting the theatres this summer, plenty of kids and adults will want to dress up like their favorite toys-come-to-life for Halloween. Store-bought costumes can be extremely pricey, and many don't last past a night out trick-or-treating. But hand-sewn costumes are durable, economical, and can be customized to fit perfectly with just the right fabrics and accents. Instead of dropping $50 or more on a Toy Story costume this Halloween, try to sew a Toy Story costume instead. When you make your own Toy Story Halloween costume, people will notice the quality, and you'll be happy you saved the money and look great. These Toy Story costume patterns will help you morph into your favorite characters in no time.

Woody

Woody is everyone's favorite cowboy, and the star of all three Toy Story films. His costume is simple: jeans, boots, a plaid shirt, vest, and cowboy hat. Very little sewing is required to re-create Woody's look. For his shirt, get a yellow button-down shirt (or dye a white one yellow with fabric dye) and use a fabric marker to draw the red lines, both vertical and horizontal. His vest is a standard vest made out of cow-print fabric. Below are Toy Story costume patterns that will help you make his vest.

4 Boys' Cowboy Vest Patterns $7.95
This kit comes with 4 different vest patterns for a boy; 2 squared and 2 v-neck patterns. Choose whichever pattern is simplest for you and fits your child the best.

Child & Adult Vest Pattern Pack $6.99
This pack includes vest patterns for both a child and adult, ranging in sizes from small to extra large, so you can find the perfect fit.

Jessie
Jessie is a spunky cowgirl found in both the Toy Story 2 & 3 movies. Like Woody, her costume requires little sewing, and can be made with items found in your or your child's closet. For Jessie's Toy Story costume, you will need a pair of jeans, boots, a white button-down shirt, cowboy hat, and cow-print chaps. Jessie's shirt and chaps are what need to be made for this costume, and they are simple.

Jessie's shirt is a white button-down shirt with a yellow yoke and matching large, yellow cuffs. You can add these 2 items to an existing shirt by cutting them out from a western shirt pattern and either sewing them on or using yellow felt and gluing them on. Here are some western shirt patterns to get you started:

Women's Western Shirt Pattern $10.99
This pattern is for a long-sleeved or short-sleeved western shirt. It has both the yoke and cuff pieces you'll need to sew Jessie's costume.

Jessie's cow-print chaps can be created as a separate piece or as pieces sewn right onto a pair of jeans. These patterns will help you create her look.

Buzz Lightyear
Buzz Lightyear is the cool space ranger from all three Toy Story films, and boys of all ages love to pretend they're Buzz. For an authentic Buzz Lightyear sewing pattern, you can search for a used Simplicity Buzz Lightyear child's pattern #9385 on the internet; it was sold in 2000 for the Toy Story 2 film, but is no longer made. However, Buzz's costume is no more than an embellished astronaut-like jumpsuit, so it's not hard to replicate by simply altering one of these existing patterns. Simply make his wings out of cardboard or use store-bought ones to finish the costume.

Superhero Boy & Girl Costume Patterns $10.15
This basic pattern from Simplicity includes a superhero jumpsuit that can easily be adapted into a Buzz Lightyear costume. They also sell an adult-sized version.

Hamm
Hamm is the witty piggy bank from the Toy Story trilogy; he is basically a pig with a slot in the back for money. Try sewing one of these pig costumes and either adding a black line for the coin slot or a tin foil-covered paper plate sticking out of the back to represent a coin.

Children's Animal Costume Pattern $7.17
This versatile pattern is for several animals. While none are specifically for a pig, this generic one-piece can be adapted simply by using pink fabric and making pointy ears and a curly tail.

Rex
Rex is a green, toy Tyrannosaurus Rex. His costume is simple; any dinosaur or dragon pattern will do, constructed in a basic Kelly green.

Child's Dinosaur Sewing Pattern $6.00
Simply make this pattern without the spikes going down the back to re-create Rex.
