The Toy Story double feature will screen in Disney Digital 3D for the next two weeks, ending on October 16. Pretty much every new CGI animated movie this year has been put in 3D, including Pixar's own Up, and the current box office champ Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. So its only fitting that the movies that started the CGI animation subgenre finally go into 3D.
Though the majority of families have seen the Toy Story films already, they may still be eager to see Woody, Buzz, Hamm, Potato Head, the aliens and more pop out in 3D. But if they go to the Toy Story double feature, they will get to see something new beforehand.
According to Cinemablend, a new full length trailer for Toy Story 3, due out in summer 2010, will play in front of the double feature. In fact, it is the only place where fans can see the trailer, unless they leak it online later. But no other theaters will show the trailer, which has the first new footage from Toy Story 3 - also in 3D.
An earlier Toy Story 3 trailer was shown before Up this summer, but it didn't have any material from the actual movie. With the new trailer, and with the original films being adapted into 3D, these next two weeks are a practice test for Toy Story 3 in 3D next year.
This is only the first major limited release coming to theaters this month, however. Soon after the Toy Story double feature closes its two week run, Michael Jackson's This Is It documentary will have its own two-week limited release - which will be popular for far different reasons.
The Toy Story double feature may not triumph at the box office, but it could make a dent for families still flocking to Meatballs. Entertainment Weekly projects a possible $11 million debut for the three hour, two film event. The lure of 3D, seeing the two classic Pixar films on the big screen again, and seeing the first look at their next adventure may be a strong one indeed.
