Toyota Plans to Shut San Antonio Plant for 3 Months
Will Cause Highly Demanded Production of the Prius to Skyrocket
The reason for the change is to reduce inventory by quite a bit and relieve much felt pressure of the sales team. Compared to June of 2007, this year sales of the Tundra has fallen a whopping 53%, according to Toyota. Toyota thinks this is the best plan for the company and they will strive to continue to be the #1 requested vehicle manufacturer.
Just because Toyota is at the top of vehicle sales doesn't mean they can't feel the hits of the economy. They created the $1.3 billion dollar plant in San Antonio plant to manufacture Tundra's. The plant has over 2,000 employees plus employees of suppliers. I'm sure they didn't know at the time that gas prices were going to skyrocket within a year. The economic issues were unforeseen and Toyota is doing what they feel is the best recovery method.
As of now, Tundra's are also being manufactured in Princeton, Indiana. Toyota plans to shift the production of the Tundra completely to San Antonio by November. There is a plan underway to have that plant be the production hub for the Toyota Highlander which is originally produced in Mississippi. The Mississippi plant will then be the new site for the highly demanded Toyota Prius. Toyota hopes that moving the production of the Prius will help with the increased demand of the gas-saving hybrids. There simply aren't enough to go around right now. A $23,000 Prius can be sold on Ebay today for almost $35,000. Americans want this car and Toyota is determined to bring it to us.
What are all of the employees of the San Antonio plant be doing for three months? Toyota plans to keep those employees busy. They will be coming up with ideas to increase their levels of efficiency. They will be meeting to come up with improved processes. Employees will get to voice their opinions on how to make the plant better.
For many years, Toyota has figured out how to read the actions of consumers. Toyota knows what consumers want and they are definitely doing what it takes to get it to us. By moving the production of the Prius, by 2010, there should be plenty of the most-wanted cars in the U.S. available to anyone who wants one.

I knew the plant in san antonio was a big mistake because of there was not a union to protect the workers there,I had the foresight to realize at the timethat when these guys lay off they do it in a big way.......by the thousands.I bet all the folks who left good jobs to work there did not see this coming,I hope for they're sake it will only close for the three months that was stated, stay strong people I hope in the down time you guys should start to think of a union to stop this from happening agaain....GO UNION!!!!!!!!!!!
I had apply at Toyota San Antonio plant. But Toyota said I do not have the experience.
I know the gas price will hit $4-5 more than 5 years before they started to build the plant at San Antonio.
Will Toyota listen to me while Toyota was making a killing on the Big SUV?
Toyota had a bad vision not to hire people that have foresight, too bad!
Toyota gets an awful lot of credit for having fuel efficient vehicles when they are needed in the USA>. but the fact is.. they made them for Japan where gas was already 4$ a gallon severla years ago.. what did they make for the USA? the Tundra..
is it worst in class fuel economy? It certainly does not compare to the GM trucks
The only reason Toyota is #1 in sales is because of Japan... the only country where they lead GM out of the top 10 world markets. Of course, no foreigners have any marketshare to speak of in japan.. gee why is that? Why would Toyota have a 50% marketshare in Japan but get beat in every other top 10 country in the World by GM?
Buy GM and take off the blinders! Support your own country instead of Japan!
