Toys 'R' Us at Its Worst

S.V.
I'm almost compelled to never shop at Toys 'R' Us again. Recent headlines highlighted the story of baby Yuki Lin who was denied a top prize of $25,000 in a Toys 'R' Us contest because her mother, Yan Zhu Liu, is not a legal U.S. resident. If the high-paid corporate lawyers Toys 'R' Us employs lack the ability to write unambiguous contest rules for their "First Baby of the Year Sweepstakes," so be it. Don't renege on the deal.

The alarming part is that the current American Online poll shows that 62% of respondents believe that the Yuki Lin should not be awarded the money. This clearly represents ethnocentrism at its ugliest. Perhaps I'm more aware of ethnic diversity because I live on a street that could be considered a subset of the United Nations. I could easily learn five new languages from my daily interactions with the diverse ethnic makeup of my neighborhood, and I am as time permits.

Sure, I'm pursuing membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and am an eighth-generation descendant of a Revolutionary War Colonel. Just because the German part of my ancestral line settled here in the late 1600s, doesn't mean I'm any less aware of the plight of new immigrants to our country. I'm sure the bigots who voted in the AOL poll will also quickly note that another runner-up in the contest was born to parents from El Salvador. Wake up, people. Most white people aren't having many children, and if they do they are waiting until they are approaching geriatric age. Who exactly would they expect to win the contest? A nice middle-aged "white" family who fits their familiar and narrowly-defined preconceptions about the world.

Why not just deny it to her and give it to the person after her who is a US citizen?

I do think this scenario was bad pr for Toys 'r Us. Couldn't they have confirmed her noncitizen status prior to informing her she won the contest? I do think our immigration laws need to be revised/enforced differently.

Let's get it straight people...it has nothing to do with anyone being anti-immigrant, and has everything to do with ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! Wake up! Give her the prize and deport her.

My opinion, they told her she won, they were compelled to pay her.

What do people here think of heelies?

And MSN? personally i think there fine and kids get really annoyed with parents bossingthem about all the time so just remember, Evan though they are kids they are often smarter than you.

That is just not right. If they declared her a winner, then she's a winner, no matter what. You can't just give someone something and then take it back. If life operated that way, we'd be an even bigger mess than we already are. LOL Poor girl.

Once they'd notified her that she'd won, they shouldn't be able to take it back. That's just wrong. (and mean!)

I actually wasn't homeschooled but am homeschooling my dd. I like your tax plan, though. I hate paying income tax, and charging higher sales tax would only affect consumers with a high-consumption lifestyle. I think it would work out perfectly for me. Perhaps, if I were runner-up I'd be upset, but I rarely enter contests because most are just marketing ploys in disguise, which annoys me.

As someone else pointed out, you would change your tune if you were the runner up, and this woman got the prize over you. Also, it's great to be forgiving, but not at the expense of the law.

I agree ignorance is not bliss, and I tend to conduct my own life in that way, but I tend to be more forgiving of others.
