I tried Skype, a free, Internet based service for a while. It worked well with a inexpensive USB phone purchased at Wal-Mart, but I still needed something for when I was out of town, or just on the road running errands.
I then discovered what I think is the best deal in the Pre-Paid cell phone industry. TracFone.
TracFone has been around for several years now and I knew of some friends who used their service and really liked it. I thought I would give it a look and was surprised at what I found.
I was able to purchase a small, Motorola TracFone for $14.99. YES $14.99!!! I then purchased a 60 minute card for $19.99. So, I walk out the store at just under $40 and when I get home I find that these phones are as easy to set up as they are to purchase. I spent a minute on their website activating the phone, not needing to enter any personal information of any kind. Simply the serial number of the phone and the number of my first phone card was all I needed to get going. I did this while the phone was charging and while I waited found a HUGE surprise! The phone I purchased was automatically set to double any minutes I put on it for the lifetime of the phone! So my $19.99 phone card of 60 minutes was now 120! Plus the 20 minutes they gave me for buying the phone! I can now live in a contract free world with more minutes than I need for only $19.99 a month, and if the phone goes bad, it has a 1 year warranty, worst case scenario, I buy another $14.99 phone! What a deal!
The service is great, I have yet to go anywhere I could not use the phone and the connection is very good.
The phones are basic, but what would you expect at the price right? It does everything I need, makes and receives calls, has voice mail I can check from any phone in the US, and has a date book with an alarm. I'm all set, and for those of you needing a cell phone for what ever reason, I suggest picking up a TracFone today!
I'll be back to write more on my experience with this great company soon!

Post a CommentJust horrible. To refill, I spent 90 minutes on the phone. Then then minutes never appeared even though they charged me. I had my credit card co. withhold payment. Bought more minutes with a card. Then they wouldn't let me use those minutes because they had turned off my phone. Now I'm just out lots of money, lots of time, and have a useless dead phone. Absolutely no attempt to fix the problem. Just taking my money and telling me to get lost.
They steal your money. Stay away.
That sounds great! I like the idea of having a phone on me for emergencies. But I don't really need many minutes. I think I'll look into it. :)
Those phones are good for those who dont use a lot of minutes. Im stuck with Nextel, and just when I think I dont use up a lot of mins I do.
