Tracy Morgan Returns as Latest 30 Rock SNL Host

Robert Dougherty
Cast members on Saturday Night Live know they've truly arrived after leaving the show when they get called back to host SNL. Tracy Morgan probably didn't seem like the most likely candidate to do this, after leaving a few years ago. Tracy Morgan had his share of fans from his SNL years, but could have just as easily fallen into post-SNL obscurity like so many others. But Tina Fey and 30 Rock gave Tracy Morgan new TV stardom, which he used to return to his old SNL stomping grounds as host.

Since leaving SNL and becoming a 30 Rock star, Tracy Morgan has added to a reputation of being a wild and crazy guy. Morgan addressed this in a monologue about news reports of one of his fish tanks blowing up, and how "ghetto" it actually was.

Like when most former SNL cast members return, Morgan had to bring back some of his old characters one more time. In Morgan's case, his most famed SNL characters are clueless animal "expert" Brian Fellows, and Astronaut Jones. They both returned with their usual antics, involving child-like opinions on animals, and trying to score with aliens.

Morgan also went into drag a few times, playing a member of The View for the second time. As a cast member, Morgan frequently impersonated Star Jones. This time, he went after Sherri Shepherd, who plays his wife on 30 Rock. Morgan also appeared in less convincing drag as a new "wife" for HBO's Big Love.

But before Morgan could do all this, he had to fight to get into Rockefeller Center, punching his way through people who actually recognized him - like Tina Fey.

Morgan has not actually been gone from SNL for that long. He has done a few guest cameos on the show since he left, most notably when Al Sharpton hosted, and when he did a rebuttal to Tina Fey's "bitch is the new black" editorial in the pre-Sarah Palin days.

Morgan completes the trifecta of 30 Rock stars who have hosted SNL. Of course, Fey and Alec Baldwin have a few hosting gigs and appearances up on Morgan. Even Jack McBrayer, a.k.a. Kenneth the Page, made a guest spot during Baldwin's latest hosting job last month. That leaves Jane Krakowski as the lone 30 Rock star with no SNL time.

For the rest of March, SNL goes on a rare break. No host has been slated for their next show on April 4, though Zac Efron is booked for the April 11'th show.
