Trade Review: Braves Teixeira for Angel's Kotchman, Prospect

Who Won One of the Biggest Trades of 2008?

Tonight, the Atlanta Braves acquired Casey Kotchman and prospect Steven Marek for top switch-hitting first baseman Mark Teixeira.

Here is a rundown of what each player will bring to his new team.

Mark Teixeira: Teixeira is a scary power-hitting first baseman who instantly upgrades the first base position for the Angels. He has a nicer bat than Kotchman and should help to drive in more runs than the contact-hitting Kotchman. He has a high on-base and slugging percentage. Teixeira is one of the league's best defensive first basemen, so he will help the Angel's defense improve as well.

Casey Kotchman: Kotchman doesn't have the same pop in his bat as Teixeira, but he is a great contact hitter who is still relatively young with upside. He has great on-base skills, but they have not shown up to date this season (.320). In his entire career, he has only hit 31 career home runs, which is quite a drop off in power production from Teixeira, who can hit 35-40 in any given season.

Steven Marek: Marek is a young fireballer who has put up fairly pedestrian stats at Double A this season. He grades out as a potential middle-of-the-road reliever if his progession continues. He did have more strikeouts than innings pitched at Single A, so his skills are still there.

How about the fact that Teixeira's contract is up after this year, and the Angels are getting a rent-a-player for the next 3 months? That being said, the Angels should now be considered a legitimate threat to overcome the Red Sox, Yankees and Rays and thereby win the World Series.
