Trade Review: Tigers Ivan Rodriguez for Yankees Kyle Farnsworth

Who Won a Major Trade at the Deadline?

One of the biggest trades of the 2008 Trade Deadline, the Yankees added MLB icon Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, trading relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to the Tigers.

Ivan Rodriguez: Since Yankee C Jorge Posada went down with a season ending injury, Rodriguez instantly upgrades the New York Yankees catching situation, taking the place of C Jose Molina. This is a great trade for the Yankees for several reasons. Money is not an issue for the Yankees, and Rodriguez is a UFA at the end of the season. They could resign him (and his nice bat) for a short term deal, or they could let him go and receive Type A Compensation (a high draft pick) in next year's draft. Rodriguez has a nice bat and some good on-base skills. The fourteen-time all star selection also has gold-glove caliber fielding skills as well. At age 36, I-Rod can still play, and will definitely help if the Yankees can make the playoffs.

Kyle Farnsworth: The Tigers were looking to dump some salary, as well as acquire a solid reliever, and they did just that. Farnsworth is a hard thrower who should instantly upgrade a questionable bullpen in Detroit. He has pitched 44 quality innings this year, posting a solid 3.65 ERA and a 43-17 K/BB ratio: one that is solid and demonstrates good overall plate dominance. Farnsworth also has the chance to close in Detroit, potentially replacing Fernando Rodney as the fireman.

Overall, I like the trade for the Yankees, but it is a fairly even trade which should help to benefit both. It will be interesting to see who will catch in Detroit now, with Brandon Inge being the only catcher on their roster at this current time.
