Trader Joe's Channa Masala: A Product Review

Susan Sonnen
This past weekend my daughter and I were cleaning house and decided it was time for a snack. Opening the freezer we discovered something that my friend had purchased at Trader Joe's a few days before: Trader Joe's Channa Masala. The box declared it an authentic Indian recipe and my daughter loves Indian food. We had some leftover blue corn chips from the previous day's meal of fiesta dip, so we grabbed the opportunity to try something new.

Trader Joe's Channa Masala list of ingredients includes: tomatoes (tomato juice, tomatoes, salt, calcium chloride, citric acid), onions, chickpeas, canola oil, water, ghee (clarified butter [milk]), spices, salt, garlic, mango powder, cilantro, bay leaves and turmeric.

Preparation: Trader Joe's Channa Masala

To heat in the microwave, remove the Trader Joe's Channa Masala from the carton and puncture the film covering 2 to 3 times. Heat on high for 4 to 4 1/2 minutes. Remove film, stir gently and serve.
To heat in a conventional oven, preheat the oven at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Place the tray of Trader Joe's Channa Masala on a cookie sheet on the oven's middle shelf. Do not puncture the film covering. Heat for 20-15 minutes. Stir gently and serve.

Both my daughter and I enjoyed Trader Joe's Channa Masala. It was spicy, but not too spicy, which in my estimation is perfection. The chickpeas add a delightful texture.

Trader Joe's Channa Masala is a quick vegetarian meal that includes no gluten. If you like Indian food, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
