Trader Joe's Chocolate Decadence Cereal - Review

You've seen the commercial with a mom and her daughter in the kitchen baking something chocolaty; the woman is tempted to lick the bowl of remaining batter but stops at the last second. Or the other commercial where its late night and a woman is sitting on her couch presumably watching a horror film. In both these commercials the announcer cuts in and explains that these ladies are having 'a chocolate attack.' Apparently they feel that Kellogg's Special K Chocolately Delight is the solution to calming their cravings without adding calories.

I'll agree that Kellogg's Special K Chocolately Delight is lower in calories, I must admit that it did little to stave off my chocolate cravings, but Trader Joe's Chocolate Decadence Cereal worked wonders! Not only does satisfy the chocolate attack, it also offers a lot of 'crunch' that you can get with some candy bars if you want it. With its blend of whole grain oats, crispy wheat, real milk chocolate pieces & swirls and thin slivers of almonds, you can even serve it warm and it still maintains a nice firm crunch! It's delicious when eaten straight out of the box, as a topping for yogurt or ice cream, heated like an oatmeal or granola, or as a breakfast cereal of course.

Having 2 types of chocolate is what I think makes the difference in the chocolatiness of TJ's Chocolate Decadence Cereal over Kellogg's Special K Chocolatey Delight cereal. The chocolate pieces in Special K's Chocolatey Delight are very firm and don't do much melting in milk. Whereas, Trader Joe's Chocolate Decadence Cereal has tiny flakes of chocolate that soften in the bowl of milk and make it very chocolaty. Then there are the wonderful curls of chocolate, little cylinders striped with milk chocolate, white chocolate, milk chocolate. You can't help but pick these out of the cereal and sample them alone! Lastly, all of the rolled whole grain oats and crispy honeycombed wheat crisps are dusted with cocoa also, so you are left with very chocolaty milk once the cereal is gone! And this low sodium cereal is vegetarian friendly, but be warned that it is made on equipment shared with peanuts and tree nuts.

Trader Joe's Chocolate Decadence Cereal has 23 grams of whole grain per ¾ cup serving. Found in the cereal aisle at Trader Joe's, its just one of their 40 kinds of cereal! I paid $3.29 for a 17.6oz box. I was also very fortunate to get the last box on the shelf! I haven't' tried it yet, but I think this cereal could make for some good baking...cookies, quick bread, muffins, etc.

While I like both these cereals in general, but Trader Joe's Chocolate Decadence Cereal does more than live up to its name! It satisfies with crunch, taste, and chocolaty goodness!
