Hummus, I'll admit, is not a pretty word. Nor does it sound inviting to the taste buds. And it certainly isn't pretty. For those of you who don't know, hummus is made out of crushed up chickpeas and usually olive oil. The texture is a smooth one with a few little crunchy lumps of chickpeas to add some excitement. Hummus comes in many flavors and is recommended as a healthy dip substitute.
Today I decided to buy the Trader Joe's Roasted Garlic Hummus because I figured that if I was going to transition away from my blazing buffalo wild wing jalapeƱo barbecue extra fat ranch dip, I might as well have something flavorful. Nothing like boring health food to ruin a good snack!
Trader Joe's Roasted Garlic Hummus is actually made out of garbanzo beans. It only has only 50 calories per serving. There are also two grams of protein and only five grams of carbs for every two tablespoons of roasted garlic hummus you put on your crackers. Not only that, you can feel free to enjoy only 2.5 grams of fat and two grams of fiber, an often overlooked part of nutrition.
If you compared the Trader Joe's Roasted Garlic Hummus to something like the Frito Lay's French Onion dip, you will find some interesting differences. The French Onion dip is only 10 more calories per serving, but you get no fiber and there are five grams of fat, twice as much as the Roasted Garlic Hummus. There's also an astounding 230 milligrams of sodium, compared to only 85 milligrams in the Trader Joe's brand.
Of course, all of this means nothing if the hummus tastes like the name sounds. However, the roasted garlic hummus is a worthy alternative. It takes a little getting used to at first because of the texture, but the Trader Joe's Roasted Garlic Hummus stands well with chips and any sort of cracker. There is definitely the prevailing taste of garlic and a little bit of lemon juice, so this is no bland substitute. In fact, the taste will grow on you if you like garlic and you could soon find yourself with an empty container if you aren't careful.
But at $2 for seven ounces, you aren't buying anything cheap. You could get twice the amount of dip for two bills, but you wouldn't get the health benefits of the Trader Joe's dip. If you are into trying something new and want to put a few dents in your caloric intake, this brand is a safe bet every once in awhile.
