Paige DavisDate of Interview: 5/25/2011
Paige Davis is on a mission to help families avoid moving scams. When making moving arrangements, some families choose disreputable companies that lock away their items until they provide money over the agreed-upon amount.
The "Trading Spaces" host offered advice for individuals and getting ready to pack and move.
" When planning for a move, it's tempting to choose a mover quickly based on the price alone. While the lowest estimate may be from a reputable mover, it's important to remember that when you move, you allow people you don't know to drive away with everything you own! Taking the time to choose a mover wisely is well worth it," Davis said.
Davis has teamed up with Mayflower to help families choose reputable moving companies. Davis suggests going with a reputable name, asking for referrals from friends and family, researching and comparing estimates.
"Ask for pickup and delivery dates in writing," Davis added.
If it's too late and you've already been swindled by a moving company, Davis offered advice.
"Report the fraud to [your] state's enforcement agency if moving within a state," she advised. Those moving to a new state can "file a complaint with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration."
Davis also recommends that those slighted by fraudulent moving companies contact MoveRescue, a service assisting consumers scammed by movers.
Since her initial work on TLC's "Trading Spaces," Davis took a hiatus from the show before making a 2007 return. She worked on Broadway in the interim.
"Luckily I have not had to choose between Broadway and TV. I've been able to balance the two. For a theater actress one of the most wonderful things about television is this little thing called a hiatus. Whenever possible I fill that time with something on stage," Davis said of her duplicitous career.
While away from "Trading Spaces," Davis confessed to missing her cast and crew the most.
"When you are on the road as much as we were, your comrades become like family. I truly missed them," she said.
While Davis is an expert at working on a budget thanks to her "Trading Spaces" hosting experience, she does have her own preferences when it comes to design. If given an unlimited budget to re-decorate her entire home, who would she select?
"I have a very modern aesthetic -- so I can narrow it down to -- Hildi, Doug, Genevieve or Laurie. But can Frank please sit with me and enjoy a cold beverage while we watch them work?"
