Traditional Candied Sweet Potatoes

4-5 whole sweet potatoes

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup water

1-2 tablespoons butter

Clean potatoes and cut into 3-4 inch chunks. Steam until about half-way cooked. Put potatoes in an electric skillet set to about 300. Mix sugar, water and butter; pour over potatoes. Cover skillet and cook for about an hour or until potatoes are very soft. Spoon syrup over potatoes every 10-15 minutes. When done, potatoes should have a nice brown candied coating.

This is one of the first recipes I learned to make, standing on a chair in my grandma's kitchen when I was 5 or 6 years old. She learned this recipe when she was a child from her grandma so it's been passed down for generations. The only big change is the cooking method. If you don't have an electric skillet you can use the oven like my great-grandma did. The amounts for butter, sugar and water are best guesses because I learned to cook like my grandma - just adding this and that "until it looks right". It's hard to mess up this recipe so feel free to experiment.
